Santee 2006 Events Issues

Posted in Santee 116,SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on January 30th, 2007 at 2:03 am

This is the newest installment of 2006 lodge events issues from lodges in the Carolinas.   For some lodges I have no information, so unless someone tells me what event patches their lodge has made this past year the update will be very short.

Consider this a not so subtle hint and request: If your lodge events issues are not yet on OAImages.com, please send the information and scans along to me.

I know of the following two event patches issued by Santee lodge in 2006. Continue Reading »

Happy Anniversary

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on January 25th, 2007 at 5:34 pm

1 L1

At the beginning of the year, I added a new banner to this site consisting of all 10th anniversary patches.     Patches commemorating lodge anniversaries have a long history, starting with the 25th anniversary  issue from Unami (L1),  intended to be worn as a neckerchief slide,  pictured on the left.

If established as an authentic lodge issue, the patch currently listed as the Nentico 12 YX2, from 1942, apparently would be the first anniversary issue issued by a lodge other than Unami. Otherwise that honor would likely fall to the Chappegat 15 L1, a leather patch worn as neckerchief slide, issued for their 25th anniversary in 1948. Continue Reading »

Why I Add Text To Images

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on January 23rd, 2007 at 8:00 am

On Cloth Talk #21, Chris Brightwell discussed how to upload images to the Scout History Wiki.     He mentioned that folks should not add any sort of additional text to the patch image.     I can understand the desire for a nice clean, uncorrupted, image on the  Wiki.     Watermarks, especially, can be very annoying and distracting.     See Getty Images for an example of what I mean.

Someone Didn’t Get the Memo

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on January 22nd, 2007 at 4:29 am

Most publications have a style or writers’ guide for their writers and editors.     On a basic level it seeks to standardize spellings, punctuation and grammar.     In more extreme cases such guidelines  seek to incite emotional responses  or  support a political position — suicide bombers versus homicide bombers, insurgents versus terrorists, pro-choice versus pro-abortion.

In recent years the Order of the Arrow, on a national level, has abandoned the use of lodge numbers.   Lodge numbers no longer appear on charters.     Lodges register at national events using their lodge name, council name and council number.     Announcers and newspaper writers at NOAC were very careful to not use historical lodge numbers.     It was as if a memo came down from heaven: Under no circumstances are the lodges’ numbers to be used. 2007 Conclave Service Flap

Posted in Occoneechee 104,SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on January 21st, 2007 at 7:51 am

104 2007 WorkdayGreg Grimes sent me this scan of a new issue from Occoneechee lodge.

These flaps are earned by lodge brothers who give service at their lodge’s workdays in preparation for the 2007 SR-7B Conclave. The first of these were awarded just recently to those few brothers who attended two workdays. Continue Reading »

2004-5 Brotherhood Involvement Award

Posted in Eswau Huppeday 560,SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on January 20th, 2007 at 7:40 am

560bro04Courtesy of Jimmy Arthurs, here’s another North Carolina issue that was missed in the most recent Blue Book.      It’s not surprising this was omitted.

This patch was earned by lodge brothers in 2004 and 2005 who completed a lengthy set of requirements.   Only about 2 dozen were earned.   For those diehard collectors of this lodge’s patches, this will be one of the tougher modern issues to acquire. Continue Reading »

LLD Fundraiser Jacket Patch

Posted in SR-7B Lodges,Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 by John E. Pannell on January 20th, 2007 at 2:12 am

70lld07.jpgTsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 stretches the line between an events patch and a lodge issue with this newest jacket patch.     I am undecided whether we should properly call this one J5 or eJ2007-1.

This 6″ jacket patch depicts Allowat Sakima in the style of a Cherokee “peace chief”.   It was produced with the specific intent of using the proceeds to fund the lodge’s LLD weekend.   Continue Reading »

1980 Fifty Miler Trek – Eno River Trail

1980 Fifty MilerThanks to David York for bringing this patch to my attention.

Tali Taktaki 70, and then later Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70, had a tradition of intermittently sponsoring Fifty Miler Treks during the week after Christmas.     The trek was in 1979 and the  last one I know of was in 2003. Continue Reading »

Special Banner on OAImages Today

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on January 18th, 2007 at 12:57 am

Here’s a little entertainment for your winter morning.

At the beginning of the year I added a new banner to the site, on a rotating basis, for the site’s 10th anniversary. Like the original site banner, the patches in this 10th anniversary banner all have something in common

Now, just a few minutes ago I added a different banner on all the lodge pages. This one will only appear today.

Our of curiosity, can anyone figure out what the patches in the banner all have in common and why I put  the banner  there today?   If you’re one of the few I told about this banner, please don’t respond… give others a chance to figure it out first.     The answer can be found with a little bit of creative research.

    Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

    An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

    Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

    Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
