Lodge 104: Prototype Woven?

Posted in Occoneechee 104,SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on March 31st, 2007 at 11:21 pm

Earlier this evening my good friend Woody Woodruff came by my home with some interesting pieces from his collection to scan for my website. After first having a wonderful dinner at an excellent local Italian restaurant, we sat down to business.

Some of the items he brought are very rarely seen. A few of them are not yet listed in Blue Book. The first of these is an apparent prototype of Occoneechee’s 45th/60th anniversary wovens. It came from another well-known North Carolina collector who recently sold much of his collection and is a member of this lodge.

What’s in a Number?

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on March 30th, 2007 at 3:20 am

As many know, the National Committee of the Order of the Arrow stopped assigning lodge numbers a few years back.     Lodge numbers no longer appear on lodge charters.     At National events, lodges are identified by their names, council names, headquarter cities, and council numbers.

For most practical purposes this has no effect at the local level upon the lodges and its members.     Nothing stops the lodges from referring to themselves by their historical lodge numbers.   Nothing stops anyone else from referring to lodges, colloquially, by the lodge number.     For example, I think most would agree it’s easier to say, “Do you have a 188 or a 536 flap  for my 561?” than “Do you have an Itibaipishe Iti Hollo or Tupwee Gudas Gov Youchiqudt Soovep flap for my Oala Ishadalakalish flap?”

However, even if something is simple and clear, there will be ways found to muddle it. Continue Reading »

Jason Ray: UNC Mascot and Eagle Scout

Posted in Current Events,Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on March 27th, 2007 at 1:03 am

Much has been written about the performance of the UNC men’s basketball team over the past weekend, from their comeback against USC to their collapse against Georgetown.       Much has also been written about the familial connections between this year’s Georgetown team and 1982′s who lost to UNC on a last minute shot by a UNC student named Michael Jordan.

Rapidly becoming lost in the hustle and bustle of March Madness is the tragedy of Jason Ray.     Jason was a member of the UNC cheerleading squad and performed the role of Ramses, the UNC mascot, for the past three years.     Friday he was struck by a car while crossing the street in NJ.     Early Monday morning he left this mortal world. The Season Has Ended: Georgetown 96, UNC 84 (OT)

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on March 26th, 2007 at 1:32 am

Old Well 25 years ago UNC won the national championship with a last second shot by Michael Jordan against Georgetown.     History did not repeat itself.   Carolina’s season came to a disappointing end Sunday evening with an overtime trouncing by Georgetown.

Carolina had a slump of sorts in the latter part of the regular seaon, displaying less than stellar play, but bounced back.   They ended their regular season with a victory over “dook”, clinching the ACC regular season title, and then went on to win the ACC tournament.

Unfortunately, that Carolina team did not show up on Sunday.     For most of the game they were firmly in control and victory seemed to be almost assured.     Then about halfway through the 2nd half it was almost as if the team went home and were replaced by a lackluster playing gang of dopplegangers.     The Tarheels went almost the whole overtime period without scoring a single point.     By that time Georgetown had completely owned them.

They now return to Chapel Hill, having made it to the Elite 8, but unable to add a National Championship banner to the Dean Dome’s rafters.   They boys in Chapel Hill will not be commemorating the 25th and 50th anniversaries of previous championships with one of their own.

Lodge 116: The Last 2006 NOAC Flap?

Posted in Santee 116,SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on March 26th, 2007 at 1:00 am

Just when you thought there would be no more patches issued for last Summer’s NOAC, along comes Santee 116 with their first ever NOAC flap.     Thanks to Jason Spangler for the information and scan.

Jason reports this flap didn’t arrive until after NOAC.   The lodge had these and wanted to release them at the 2006 Fall Fellowship, but they could not decide how to distribute them.   Once a decision was made, the lodge released these at their banquet in January 2007.

Lodge 104: Uncatalogued Elangomat Issue?

Posted in Occoneechee 104,SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on March 24th, 2007 at 5:37 pm

104elan-noname.JPGGreg Grimes sent me the image of the patch at the head of this post. He thinks it might be an unknown/unlisted elangomat issue from Occoneechee lodge.

He reports this was in a collection of items from Occoneechee and therefore suspects this piece could also be from that lodge. He has no other evidence to support this contention.

This lodge is and has been avidly collected by many folks. While certainly possible, it would be a bit unusual for an issue to have escaped the notice of the various collectors and cataloguers for all these years. Continue Reading »

According to Darrell Green, Atta Kulla Kulla 185 has issued its first chenille.     There were 300 of these made.   All area individually numbered in embroidery on the face of the patch.

The lodge has plans for a second chenille, an unnumbered version of this one, to be issued after this chenille sells out.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
