Lodge 560: Unlisted Prototype?

Posted in Eswau Huppeday 560,SR-5 Lodges by John E. Pannell on June 30th, 2007 at 11:43 pm

Here’s another oddity that many have not seen and I have no real idea what it should be.

While at the SC TOR this past weekend, someone told me Johnny Pleasants had on his table a red bordered flap with the S9 design.     “Impossible!”   I said, “There is no such flap.”   I walked over to Brush Creek’s table and asked Johnny about it.   He reaches into one of his bins and pulls out this piece.

At the TOR: Smile, You’re on Camera!

sctor1.jpgLive blogging  at the SC TOR… There’s three open wifi connections here at the SC TOR, one of them strong enough that I can sit here in the TOR room and write this entry.   Some don’t realize they’re about to become “internet celebrities”.

The photo on the left was taken early in the evening during the dinner lull.   Most didn’t know that Chris Jensen was going to make a Domino’s run a little later on.   The crowd wasn’t bad with the big room allowing lots of space for folks to mill around and socialize.     The room was refrigerated to “icy cold”, at least to me.     Since it was in the low 90s here today, that’s good.

Earning the Bird Study Merit Badge?

Posted in Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on June 29th, 2007 at 3:44 am

finch_eggs.jpgI never did earn the Bird Study merit badge when a Scout.     At least to me, it’s becoming obvious why.

Thursday evening I was standing undereath the gazebo on my deck just after a thunderstorm was passing by.     I was sitting there on the phone with a friend, talking about  a few things.       On a table I have a couple of potted plants.     I reached into one to see if it needed watering, since the rain did not hit it.     As I reach into the plant something flew out, hit me in the chest and flew away.     It surprised me.

Dave S. is meeting me at my home tomorrow around noon and then we head south to the SC Summer TOR.     So, tonight I’m frantically trying to organize things and get ready.

Whoa! Pink!

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on June 27th, 2007 at 5:20 am

I remember as a child looking at old photographs and thinking about how bland and uncolorful everything looked.     Not only were the photographs in black and white, but it even appeared that everything those photos would be drab, even if they were in color.     Cars were black.     Men dressed in grey and blue and black.     Buildings were grey stone.     Everything was so … blah.     So, I was stunned when I ran across a baby picture of my uncle from 1933 that was in color!   We even had some color home movies that predated Dorothy’s rendezvous with the Wizard.   (My grandfather was a Bell Labs employee, so he had access to technology that was not  in common usage then.)

Patches were much the same way.     Many older patches are works of art, but the majority tend to be rather bland having just a few colors.   Sure, there is the ocassional colorful masterpiece, but that is the exception rather than the rule.

    2 THOUSAND Spam Comments

Posted in OAImages News by John E. Pannell on June 27th, 2007 at 1:35 am

I missed  this a couple of days ago.     There have now been more than two thousand spam comments submitted to this blog!     Most were for various adult type products, obviously not suitable for this blog.

Thanks to the Akismet plug-in that comes with WordPress, the software that powers this blog, all but a very few were ever seen by anyone other than myself.     Even those were very quickly deleted.

The total number spam comments, as I write this, now stands at 2,071.     At his pace, I will probably hit 3000 before the end of Summer.

    China… and Deck Furniture!?

s_china-110.jpgSince the discussion in various forums has centered lately around patches made in Asia, rather than the U.S., I thought I’d share some family vacation photos.     My brother and his family are currently visiting my sister-in-law’s family in China.

They did the usual tourist-type things in Beijing.     Then headed to Yangshuo and Guilin for several days.     From there they headed to Shanghai and then took the new high speed train back to Beijing.

    Update: South Carolina Summer TOR

Posted in OAImages News,Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on June 25th, 2007 at 4:15 am

This is just a reminder for any collectors planning to attend this weekend’s 3rd Annual South Carolina Summer Trade-o-ree.   I will be making the trip this year with my laptop and scanner.     If you have any patches that are not yet on this site — whether they’re new or old issues — we can fix that problem.   Bring them along so I can scan them.

I also am planning to bring my OA  bullion collection with  me to show off for those who may not have seen these before.

    Feds File Charges Against Moritz

Posted in Current Events,Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on June 24th, 2007 at 8:20 am

From an Associated Press story published at the International HeraldTribune (IHT)  website:

SCRANTON, Pennsylvania: U.S. prosecutors on Wednesday accused the sales manager of an embroidery company of conspiring to falsely claim that American flag patches sold for military uniforms were made in the United States.

Brian Moritz was charged with conspiracy to have a false certification made to the federal government that hid the fact that the patches actually were manufactured in Thailand.

The Buy American Act  requires the Department of Defense to buy clothing made in the United States.   The charges stem from a certification from Mr. Moritz that the flag patches were American made.

    Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

    An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

    Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

    Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
