Chiefly Patches, Part 4: Lodge of the Northeast Region Chief

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on June 22nd, 2007 at 2:44 am

It’s been a while since the last part of this series.   Some probably thought I had forgotten about these.   It takes some time to get these posts together and, not too surprisingly, my focus here is more on issues from my neck of the woods.

This is the fourth of an ongoing series of articles about patches issued by the lodges of the national officers of the Order of the Arrow. Previous articles can be found at these links.

Lodge 118: Achowelendam Chapter

Posted in SR-7B Lodges,Wahissa 118 by John E. Pannell on June 21st, 2007 at 12:50 am

This is probably the last post about Wahissa lodge patches for a while. “Wahissa Week” is now ending.

This update is much longer than those for the other chapters. Achowelendam chapter is handily the busiest of Wahissa’s chapters when it comes to patches. The first three of these have been on OAImages for a while now, but are not yet listed in Blue Book.

Lodge 118: Takachsin Chapter Items

Posted in SR-7B Lodges,Wahissa 118 by John E. Pannell on June 20th, 2007 at 12:20 am

This is the third in a recent spate of posts for new chapter issues from Wahissa lodge. Up next is Takachsin chapter with two new issues.

Takachsin’s A3, previously listed, denotes their chapter as “Leader of Happy Places”. This is not what the chapter had wanted. “Happy Place” is the official translation of the lodge name. They translate Takachsin as leader. The chapter wanted to claim their apellation as “Leader of Happy Place”. The new “A4?” corrects this error. Other than that, the designs are identical.

Lodge 118: Minsi Chapter

Posted in SR-7B Lodges,Wahissa 118 by John E. Pannell on June 19th, 2007 at 12:29 am

This beginning to seem like it’s “Wahissa Week” here. I’m not done yet, either. There will be at least one more post of unlisted Wahissa items to come.

Next up is a piece from Minsi chapter issued in 2000 that has evaded documentation and much notice, until now. This is a patch I would expect to befuddle latter day collectors if it were found outside of its area. There is nothing on the patch, either in the form of text or design elements, that mark it as an issue of Wahissa lodge. Add to the confusion that Minsi is also the name of a merged lodge.

Lodge 118: Eke Otkia Chapter Items

Posted in SR-7B Lodges,Wahissa 118 by John E. Pannell on June 18th, 2007 at 12:31 am

Here’s four ovals from Wahissa lodge’s Eke Otkia chapter that are not yet listed in Blue Book.

One of them is my current frontrunner for the “Most Audacious Use of Pink on a North Carolina Patch” award. That pink is so hot it starts its own heatwave!

Lodge 117: Unlisted Neusiok Chapter Item

Posted in Croatan 117,SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on June 17th, 2007 at 9:10 am

This is another unusual piece from Croatan lodge that seems to have evaded Blue Book and the other various catalogues throughout the years. It’s a diamond shaped patch from Neusiok chapter.

This is one of the more unusual items I’ve seen lately. The design is printed on some sort of light blue sateen-like material. This was then mounted on a backing that feels like card stock, or something similar. A yellow rolled edge border and a thin leather loop were added to finish it off.

This is well beyond the type of material I can personally collect. Would this be described as “printed on composition”?

Lodge 117: 1984 Conclave Delegate Neckerchief

Posted in Croatan 117,SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on June 16th, 2007 at 11:08 pm

For whatever reasons many North Carolina collectors and Blue Book editors have not paid too much attention to lodge delegate neckerchiefs issued for our section conclaves. As I’m not native to here I don’t understand this bias. Many were forgotten. Only in recent years are they being properly documented.

Woody Woodruff and his wife were here earlier this evening and he brought more stuff from his collection for me to scan. Many of the piece are not yet in Blue Book. Among them was this neckerchief issued by Croatan lodge for the 1984 SE-7 Conclave.

A Thought for Today

Posted in Current Events,Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on June 15th, 2007 at 3:28 am

It’s kind of slow here today and I’m just about at the point where I can catch up on some things I’ve been ignoring for some time.   So, I thought I’d share a story with you all that is not directly related to Scouting.

All brothers in the Order of the Arrow have been similarly admonished.     All Christians should have learned what Jesus considered the greatest commandment.     I expect most other religions and philosophies have similar beliefs in this regard, though I cannot cite them.   Consider those admonishments and precepts,  together with current world events,  as you read this story.

Gone Home: John R. Wallace, Sr.

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on June 14th, 2007 at 3:31 am

Pete James passed this along to the members of patch-l on the evening of 6/13:

It is with great sadness that I inform you that John R. Wallace Sr. (ed. note: known as “kindanic” on eBay)passed away on June 13th with complications from pneumonia at the age of 75.

John was a former Wood badge instructor for numerous courses, Vigil honor member of our Lodge and a Silver Beaver recipient. He worked staff at numerous National Jamborees and NOAC’s.

I Kan Spel Reel Gud?

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on June 13th, 2007 at 4:00 am

Many people have trouble spelling and pronouncing lodge names.     In some cases the lodge name is even mispronounced when announcing major awards at NOAC, like my lodge’s name was.     Lodge members even stumble over their own lodge’s name.   So, it shouldn’t be surprising that lodges have had their official names misspelled on their own patches.

Joe Taylor recently wrote on patch-l that he collects patches with misspelled lodge names.     He graciously shared his list with me.   I was even able to add  a few recent items to his list.

Recent OAImages News

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

I have added special pages on this site for the 2011 Indian Summer and 2011 Summit Corps. I still have a few images to add but most of what I have images for is now on the site. Thanks for Rick Horne for most of these images.

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
