2010 Jamboree: It’s Coming

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on January 25th, 2008 at 6:57 am

jambo2010.jpgThe Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has posted a promotional video for the 2010 National Jamboree.

In what could be construed as an implicit acknowledgement of the problems of the 2005 Jamboree the 2010 Jamboree is being billed as  ”The best, most exciting, fun filled, safest Jamboree EVER!”     I can fully understand why the BSA wants to make it clear that safety is of paramount concern, but I have to wonder why it gets such billing in a promotional video.

Will Scouts get excited about spending lots of money to attend something that is billed as “The … safest Jamboree”?     Maybe the BSA’s target audience for this video is parents and other adults who have serious concerns about this event after hearing about the numerous problems of the 2005 Jamboree.

When I heard the learn'd astronomer,
When the proofs, the figure, were ranged in columns before me,
When I was shown the charts and diagrams, to add, divide, and measure them,
When I sitting heard the astronomer where he lectured with much applause in the lecture room,
How soon unaccountable I became tired and sick,
Till rising and gliding out I wander'd off by myself,
In the mystical moist night-air, and from time to time,
Look'd up in perfect silence at the stars.

Lodge 70: 2008 LLD Patch Issued

Posted in SR-7B Lodges,Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 by John E. Pannell on January 24th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

I have just received word that the 2008 LLD jacket patch for Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge has arrived.     Our LLD was three weeks ago, but the patches could not be made available in time.     As with the 2007 issue, one each is  issued to LLD participants and staff with the extras being sold to fund the next year’s LLD.

They will not be generally available to lodge members until next week.   However I am told at least one person has managed to get his in advance of the South Carolina TOR this weekend.

A Riddle for Today

Posted in Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on January 24th, 2008 at 6:01 am

Here’s a riddle, in the form of a limerick, for your pleasure today.

I once knew a gal from Dundee,
Whose age had the last digit three.
The square of the first
Was was her whole age reversed,
So what would the lady’s age be?

This  isn’t very hard.   In fact, it’s pretty simple to solve if you read carefully.

Please give everyone a chance.   If you think you know the answer, please send me an email rather than answering it in the comments.

Thanks, Chris.

These 50 States: Arkansas

Posted in Patch Collecting,These 50 States by John E. Pannell on January 23rd, 2008 at 5:29 am

It’s time to take a break from  snowy New England  and head to fairer climes.

This is the  fifteenth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.

It’s turning out to be a bit harder to find true state shaped patches than I thought it would be.     There are a couple of “easy” states with notable state shaped pieces that I have yet to cover but for many states  I have had to resort to  patches that use the state shape in their design.       Arkansas is another such state.

These 50 States: Maine and New Hampshire

Posted in Patch Collecting,These 50 States by John E. Pannell on January 22nd, 2008 at 6:08 am

While I’m trying to work on some other things I  thought I’d  post another  installment in this series,  one of the shortest to date.     Heading northeast from Vermont,    I turn my attention towards Maine and New Hampshire.

This is the  fourteenth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont and Virginia.

These two states are served by only three lodges.     Passaconaway 220  is the sole New Hampshire lodge.     Maine is split between Pamola 211 and Madockawanda 271.   None of these lodges every issued any patches shaped like their respective states, but the states’ shapes have been used in two items from Madockawanda 271.

Patch Theft at the Dallas TOR

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on January 22nd, 2008 at 1:02 am

There is some bad news to report from last weekend’s Dallas Trade-o-ree.     Destry Hoffard wrote Monday on patch-l:

Just wanted to give you guys the heads up in case anybody happens to hear of a Baluga Lodge #538 S1 First Flap (with certificate) showing up unexpectedly. Roy More (our company President) was in Dallas at the TOR over the weekend and had one stolen right off his table. Patch was crispy mint, and included the little index card authenticity certificate from the old Advisor of the Lodge.

These 50 States: Vermont

Posted in Patch Collecting,These 50 States by John E. Pannell on January 21st, 2008 at 5:00 am

I keep meaning to  get back to this series.   However I other things seem to take up the time I need to get these together.     There’s some classic OA memorabilia yet to come.

This is the  thirteenth in an ongoing series of posts about state shaped patches. Previous entries have covered state shaped patches from Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Since the last post in this series covered Massachusetts, I thought I would stay in New England and move north to Vermont.       This is going to be a rather short post as you might guess.

Maryland 82 — UNC 80

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on January 20th, 2008 at 4:23 am

It was a snowy Saturday here in North Carolina.     I decided to continue to celebrate the anniversary of my 21st birthday and went to see Sweeney Todd instead of watching what I thought would be a boring game, an easy win for the Tar Heels.     Boy, was I wrong!

Remind me never to go out to the movies when there’s a Carolina game on!

The streak has ended.   Kansas and Memphis are the only two remaining undefeated teams.     Maryland beat North Carolina.     The Tar Heels just couldn’t pull out another last second victory and have dropped to 18-1.     I expect they’ll drop to about number 3, maybe  4, when the polls come out Monday.

More at AP Coverage on Yahoo! Sports.

The Tar Heels next travel to play Miami on Wednesday.

Tipisa 326 “non-patch”

326-luggage-tag-rubber-2008.jpg For collectors of all things Florida or  luggage tags, Tipisa 326 has a new tag available.   This is not the usual embroidered tag made for other lodges or for event, as this one is a molded, rubber-like material.   And looks pretty sharp.

Recent OAImages News

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
