For Our Friends to the North…

Happy Canada Day!

I lived in Buffalo, NY for four and a half years.     Some of my fonder memories of those years were of the time I spent in Canada.     Toronto and Ottawa are beautiful cities.

Bicycling along the Niagara River from Fort Erie to Niagara-On-The-Lake was a very scenic ride.     Even having to deal with the traffic in Niagara Falls,   Ontario, didn’t ruin the experience.     It was kind of strange to look at “home” over there, just across the river.

Another highlight was the week around the beginning of July when communities in both New York and Ontario would host the Friendship Festival, celebrating the heritage of two great nations.     With that in mind, I would like to share this tribute to Canada.   (video after the jump)

One more quick story…

One time while returning from Canada, the US customs agent asked me, “How long were you in Canada, sir?”

“About a half hour,” I answered.

“Purpose of your trip?”

“To buy stamps and beer,” I responded with a straight face.

You can bet I was promptly instructed to open my trunk. It was all true. I collected Canadian stamps at the time and had driven there to go to the post office for the newest issues. Also while there I visited The Beer Store so I could purchase some beers that were not available in the US. This was in the days before NAFTA and there were limits on how much you could transport across the border without paying duty.

Things were complicated a bit as I had done some shopping in the US just before crossing and still had those packages in the trunk. I had receipts to match so there was no other problem. All was in order and my purchases were below the duty threshold. I was quickly on my way home without further delay
