Ah’Tic Lodge #139 hosted the 1950 Area 3B meeting for lodges of western Pennsylvania at Camp Mountain Run, in Penfield, PA.   The patch was a red arrowhead-shaped felt with white silk-screened lettering.

In 1950 Nentico Lodge #12 hosted the lodges of eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia for the Area 3A Fellowship Pow-Wow on April 29-30 at the two-year-old Broad Creek Scout Camps in Whiteford, Maryland.   The event featured the first known piece of Area 3A memorabilia, a burned wooden slice neckerchief slide saying “Broad Creek” and “WWW”.

1978 SE-3A Conclave

1978 SE-3A Conclave Patch

The 1978 SE-3A Conclave, “Service By The Sea”, was hosted by Klahican 331.   The pocket patch is pictured here.

This patch design is an apparent departure from established customs at that time.   There is no mention of the host lodge on the design.   Its totem does not appear.   There is nothing to indicate where the conclave was held.   One might be able to guess the host lodge as the only lodges in this section on the coast were Klahican and Croatan.

Lodge 116: 2008 Spring Fellowship

Santee 116 2008 Spring Fellowship

Along with the 2007 activity patches, Brad Hutto recently sent me an image of the 2008 Spring Fellowship patch from Santee lodge.     Santee lodge has had a Winter banquet patch before its Spring Fellowship in recent years.   So, I am presuming this is the lodge’s second activity patch for 2008.

The patch design prominently features the lodge’s Carolina Parakeet totem.     In addition it features a small representation of the state of South Carolina, a palmetto tree, and crescent moon which are all commonly found on the lodge’s flaps.     The patch also commemorates Santee lodge’s 70th anniversary.

On How to Preserve Collections

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on August 28th, 2008 at 5:02 am

Recently I posted some comments from a friend of mine sent via private email dealing with the perceived mindset of many on preserving their patches for posterity.   Robert Ross has since revealed himself to be that writer.

A couple of readers have asked that he share his thoughts about how patches and Scouting memorabilia should be stored and preserved, with an eye towards long term preservation.   Mr. Ross is an archivist who has worked in libraries in the San Diego area.     The rest of this post is his words.

I have seen a truly impressive collection of flaps. It was a nearly complete number collection. The display was impressive. However, the value of the flaps was greatly reduced. The owner of the collection managed to acquire a stand of swinging carpet sample frames. Think of a rack of posters, and you flip from one poster to another. The frames were metal with a cardboard centre. The owner affixed the flaps by stapling them to the cardboard backing. The staples had been present for years. The truly horrifying part about this anecdote is the collection includes an authentic Baluga.

Area 3A: Fake 1962 and 1966 Patches

Fake 1962 Area 3A Patch

I was going to hold off on mentioning the fake Area 3A patch that has been recently circulating until I got to the appropriate year, but yesterday a second fake surfaced.   There are now modern fakes circulating of both the 1962 and the 1966 Area 3A conference patches, both originating from an eBay seller in Germany.   The fakes are clearly of modern manufacture, and are most easily distinguished by their cut edges (the real issues have rolled edges).

The BSA’s Western Region has been reorganized.     As a result, the OA sections within that region have changed.     Roy More wrote about this on his blog almost two weeks ago but I did not see it until tonight.

Here’s the official announcement from the Western Region of the Order of the Arrow:   Western Region Realignment Announced.

Success in Removing Unauthorized Reproductions From eBay

Posted in Patch Collecting by skyloo442 on August 26th, 2008 at 1:25 pm

I recently had success in removing 2 Skyloo 442 fakes and 1 Wauna La-Mon’Tay 442 fake from Ebay. This is how I did it. First, I emailed the seller and let him know that as a representative from the lodges involved we find it highly repulsive that he is making and selling unauthorized reproductions of our patches without our permission and that we request him to stop or we will seek recourse from the proper authorities. Second, I sent in a request to eBay to have the items removed as unauthorized reproductions made without permission. By doing those two things the items were removed from eBay inside 24 hours.

This is the first time I have had this happen. I had reported fakes before without any action and I had requested the individual to do the same without success. What I think happened is that I did both within hours of the listing and I did them one after the other. Maybe eBay is starting to police itself somewhat — you would think so after losing that lawsuit.

Well, I wanted to report the success and tell everyone that your efforts are not always in vain. Just keep trying.

Muscogee 221 ZC1

A new fake of Muscogee’s Ceremonies chenille, listed as C2 has recently appeared on eBay (screencap). Thanks to Jason Shull and Jason Spangler for informing me of this.

The fake, “ZC1?”, is shown at the head of this post.     I lifted the image from the eBay auction, something which I normally do not do.       As this is a fake, I do not feel any guilt in doing this.

Santee 116 eX2007-5?

Better late than never!   Thanks to Brad Hutto I finally have images and information for the 2007 events issues from Santee lodge.     My former usual source for images from this lodge is apparently not much involved with Scouting anymore so information on their events issues has been hard to come back these past couple of years.     I appreciate Brad’s filling me in on what the lodge did last year.

With the exception of the Camp Coker OA Week round, tentatively labeled eR2007-4?, all the patches prominently feature the lodge’s Carolina Parakeet totem.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

I have added special pages on this site for the 2011 Indian Summer and 2011 Summit Corps. I still have a few images to add but most of what I have images for is now on the site. Thanks for Rick Horne for most of these images.

To view these items, go to OA Images: National and Special Events Patches page and select either of these events from the "Other Specialties" drop down box. Read the Full Post

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
