1954 Area 3B Patch

In 1954, Ah-Tic Lodge #139 hosted the lodges of northwestern Pennsylvania for the Area 3B meeting at Camp Mountain Run. The patch features the deer totem of the host lodge. This was the first embroidered patch used in Area 3B; all earlier patches were screened designs on felt.

On May 1-2, 1954, Octoraro Lodge #22 hosted the Area 3A Pow Wow near Rising Sun, Maryland at Camp Horseshoe, which had been the site of the first Area E meeting in 1948. A yellow plastic neckerchief slide was issued for the event; the slide has the horseshoe logo of the camp, but does not indicate the date of the event.

Lodge 104: Quest for the Golden Arrow Flap

Occoneechee 104 F8?

Occoneechee lodge issued a flap last weekend in honor of the lodge winning the “Quest for the Golden Arrow” at last Spring’s SR-7B conclave.     No mention of this contest victory is made on the flap.

The design of the flap is very similar to the flap the lodge issued last Spring for the SR-7B Conclave, “F7?“.     Both flap designs are inspired by the movie “300″.   On this new flap the border was changed from red to blue and a dark yellow (“golden”) arrow was added.

2008 W-1C Conclave Patches

As promised I am reporting on the W1C Conclave held at Treasure Valley Community College, Ontario, Oregon. The conclave was held September 19-21, 2008. This was a wet conclave as the rain decided to wait 375 miles to let loose. Usually Portland gets the rain and Ontario is dry. Five patches, three pocket patches and two jacket patches, were issued for this event.

The jacket patches are still in transit and I will scan it when it arrives. One is the regular jacket patch, which is pictured on the W1C website and the other jacket patch has a special border and was given to those that spent $300.00 at the section auction. The three pocket patches were the participant, staff and “auction donor”. I think the design was well executed. The use of a compass with the OA arrow was really nice and the patches looked outstanding.

Tali Taktaki lodge hosted 1984 SE-7 conclave at Camp Wenasa in Brown Summit, NC.   The pocket patch for this event, pictured, marks the first use of a name for this conclave, “Old North State Conclave”.

It’s only speculation on my part, but I suspect the naming of this conclave might be an innovation brought to the section by the returning lodges of western North Carolina.   North Carolina is nicknamed the “Old North State”, deriving from the 1710 division of the Carolina colony into North and South Carolina.       Since the section now included most of North Carolina this moniker seems appropriate.

Occoneechee lodge held its Fall Fellowship this past weekend at Camp Durant.     Two new patches made their first appearance here.     This entry covers the activity patch issued for this event.

A new flap, commemorating the lodge winning the Quest for the Golden Arrow at last Spring’s SR-7B conclave, also made its debut.     I need to verify some information about the flap and will cover it in a separate post.

The Fall Fellowship patch, pictured to the left, is the third of this year’s “headdresses” series of patches.     The lodge’s thunderbird totem is depicted wearing a horned bonnet, in the style of the Great Plains tribes.

In 1953, the lodges of Virginia met as Area 3C for the first time at Camp Darden near Franklin, VA. The meeting was hosted by Blue Heron Lodge #349, and was the only meeting to be held at Camp Darden; Blue Heron hosted later 3C meetings at Camp Pipsico.

A white plastic neckerchief slide was issued for the event. There was also a beaded necklace with feathers, shells, and the round plastic slide attached at the bottom.

In 1953, the lodges of western Pennsylvania returned to the site of the 1948 Area F meeting, Camp Twin Echo near Ligonier, PA. Anicus Lodge #67 hosted the meeting, which was held the weekend of August 28-30.

This was the only 3B meeting for which no patch was issued. There were instead at least three neckerchiefs; a yellow neckerchief with a red silk-screened design, a red neckerchief with the same design silk-screened in yellow, and a version of the yellow neckerchief with a broad red border. The unbordered neckerchiefs have pinked edges.

1953 Area 3A Slide

In 1953, Monaken Lodge #103 hosted the lodges of Area 3A at Camp Seven Mountains near State College Pennsylvania.

A white plastic neckerchief slide was issued for the event; like the 1950, 1951, and 1952 slides, this slide is quite scarce and hard to find. The slide features the “heart of Pennsylvania” design used by the Juniata Valley Council, with the Camp Seven Mountains symbol inside the heart. Continue Reading »

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
