Lodge 188: More Chapter Events Patches?
There has been some discussion among patch collectors lately over what makes a patch an OA issue. While this is usually pretty straightforward with lodge issues, the distinction often becomes murky with chapter and events patches. I plan to discuss this in a future post.
With that in mind I put forward two patches that might be chapter event patches from Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge. In some respects these appear to be OA items, but at the same time a good case can be made for them being district events patches. I do not have any good contacts in this lodge that can decisively attest to nature of these items.

The first item is pictured at the top of this post. At first glance it would appear to be just a camporee patch from Anson District. Notice that neither the council or lodge is named on the patch. However, the use of the “WWW” leads one to believe the lodge had something to do with this. Is this a chapter item or not?
The next item, pictured to the right, might appear to be just another event patch from the Concord District. However, note the inclusion of “O.A.” to the left of the tipi. In my opinion, it’s hard to make a convincing argument that this is not an Order of the Arrow issue of some sort. What other likely explanation would there be for “O.A.” to be included on the patch if it wasn’t an OA issue?
Several other patches from this district/chapter are already shown on my site.
The use of the word “district” instead of “chapter” on these patches is problematic. There are two other chapter pieces from this lodge that were included in the last Blue Book (2006). Both of these are from Rowan chapter, and are labeled on the patches as such. A third patch is shown on my site as an event issue but says “Rowan District“.
Considering these to be OA items, the listing data for these two piece would be as follows:
| Chapter | Issue | Bdr Color/Type | Bkgd | Name | fdl/BSA | Comments | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anson | eR1976? | YEL | R | LBL | RED | Anson District Camporee Winter 76 | |
| Concord | eX1987? | RED | R | WHT | RED | BLK | fdl; 1987 Deep Freeze |

It would be helpful if someone from lodge 188, or very familiar with the lodge’s activities in the 1970s and 1980s would step forward here. Can anyone confirm what these various patches are? Can anyone explain them or why various OA related design elements and words were used if they are not OA issues?

I’d say it could be interpreted as a Chapter event patch as well as a Camporee patch as it does have some OA designation. It has been customary for some Chapters of various Lodge’s to run the camporee or at least give support to the District Camporees. Since I’m more familiar with Yamni Wakpa Chapter of Lodge 104, I’ll use them as an example.
For several years now, 3-Rivers District has relied on the OA Chapter for running and developing the camporee. Various troops used to do it but when it became a problem in getting a troop to volunteer, the District looked to the OA Chapter.
If you take a look at the Yamni “eX” patches on this site, we’ve always tried to use our Chapter name to indicate the Chapter provided service to the District for the camporee. In the past the Chapter has done the patch design and it’s easy for us to include our name on the emblems. If one was to look at the eX2008 we also used our Chapter totem in the patch design.
So my feelings are that if there is some reference to the OA, there had to be at least some involvement from the OA and the patch should be listed to reflect the involvement….
My 2 cents worth.
