1947 Area Z Meeting Patch

1947 Area Z Meeting Patch

Before there were “Dixie Fellowships” there were Area Z meetings. This area was split from Area J in 1945, as this area grew unmanageably large, and covered all of South Carolina and parts of northern Georgia. The South Carolina portion of this section would later form the core of what was to become known as “Dixie”, and home of the “Dixie Fellowship”.     The first patch for an Area Z meeting was issued in 1947.

The 1947 Area “Z” Meeting patch is a cornerstone of South Carolina conclave patch collecting.     This items is extremely desirable by those who collect “Dixie Fellowship” material.     This patch is made of felt with the text printed upon it.     As such, copies of this item are frequently damaged in some way.

Muscogee lodge 221 hosted this meeting at Camp Barstow.

Thanks to Jason Spangler (www.santeeswapper.com) for supplying the images for the Area Z and Dixie Fellowship patches used on this blog.

1956 Area 3C Patch

The lodges of Area 3C met in 1956 at Camp Theodore Roosevelt, near Chesapeake Beach, Maryland on the shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Amangamek Wipit Lodge #470 hosted the event; this was the first area meeting hosted by the lodge, which had officially changed its name from “Amanquemack” at the start of the year. This was also the only area meeting ever held at Camp Roosevelt.

The event patch was embroidered on white twill with a tab to cut a buttonhole, and featured the US Capitol with a superimposed arrow.

BSA Centennial Coin

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on October 24th, 2008 at 5:02 am

I have to admit up front, I am surprised this happened.   I didn’t expect this to pass through the current Congress.

President Bush recently signed into law the Boy Scouts of America Centennial Commemorative Coin Act (H.R. 5872).     This law authorizes the minting of 350,000 silver dollar coins to honor the BSA’s centennial in 2010.

The BSA has issued a press release about this coin:

…à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“It is a great honor for the Scouts to be recognized with this Centennial Commemorative coin.   We thank the President, the House and the Senate, especially Congressman Sessions and Senator Sessions for their support,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive, Boy Scouts of America.   This is a treasured moment in the history of our organization and we are grateful for the millions of Scouts and volunteers who have served as the foundation of our success for nearly 100 years.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ …

The final design for this coin has yet to be determined.     The “coin” shown is not what will be released.

For further details, please see the press release from the Boy Scouts of America.

1994 Fall Fellowship

1994 Fall Fellowship

This patch, pictured, was in a group of patches I’m trying to identify for someone.     Clearly, at least to me, it’s an OA lodge issue.   It would also appear to be part of a set that forms a unified design of some sort, but I don’t have any of the other pieces.

Does anyone know what lodge it’s from?     If so, please comment.

Techumseh 332 S3a and ZS1?

Dan Jechura recently wrote me about a probable fake that has recently surfaced of the Tecumseh 332 S3a.   He has discussed the authenticity of this piece with Cary Sitarz, Dave Eby, and Roy More.     All four agree this probably a new fake.   I am inclined to agree with them.

Dan also sent along scans of an authentic 332 S3a and the purported new fake.     A scan of the front sides of these two patches is show on the left.

1959 Area VI-E Conference was held at Camp Sebring.   O-Shot-Caw lodge, rechartered only a few years before this, was the host lodge. The pocket patch is pictured here.

For the first time in this area, a neckerchief was also produced for this conclave.     Its design is an adaptation of the pocket patch sewn directly onto white cloth with a red border added.     It’s pictured after the jump.

Nayawin Rar lodge hosted the 1986 Old North State (SE-7) Conclave at Camp Tuscarora.   Eleven lodges from North Carolina, all of the staet except for Tsali 134 which was part of “Dixie” were in attendance.

This years conclave patch had a rather simple design.   The traditional representation of Nayawin Rar’s night hawk totem is the principal part of the design.   On some level this works very well with the theme for this conclave, “Adventures of the Spirit”.     I like it.

Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs for also sending me images of most of the remaining 2008 event patches for Eswau Huppeday lodge.     This includes three new event patches as well as jacket patch.     The jacket patch combines four of this year’s lodge event patches as well as the recently issued “Elangomat Nimat” patch.

The Winter banquet patch, whose design is shown at the bottom right of the jacket patch, has not yet been issued.   Traditionally, Eswau Huppeday’s Winter Banquet takes place on the first Saturday of January.     So, their 2008 Winter Banquet will happen in January 2009.     Maybe they do that just to make my head spin? ;)

What Is an OA Issue?

Great Western Council - Jubilee 1983

Great Western Council - Jubilee 1983

There has been some discussion on patch-l recently about what makes a patch an OA issue.     It was sparked when Jeff Ansley shared the patch shown to the left with the group.

Jeff questioned whether or not this item should be listed as an event patch for Malibu 566 because of the inclusion of what appears to be the “MGM Indian” in its design.     The general concensus was that this was not an OA issue.   It was noted the design included symbols of the various programs found within this council, of which the Order of the Arrow was one.

I also touched upon this issue, in my recent post about two unlisted items that might be chapter issues from Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188.

This leads to a broader discussion of what is an OA issue and how is it decided whether or not to include an item on this site or in Blue Book.   It’s not always as simple as you might think.

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
