Veterans Day
Today is Veterans Day, an American holiday honoring those who have served in our country’s military. On Memorial Day we honor those who have died for this country. Today we honor all who have served in the military, living or dead.
In many other nations, particularly those of Europe and the former British Empire, this date commemorates the end of World War I and is known as Armistice Day. The poppy, which grew abundantly in Flanders, has become the symbol of Armistice Day. “In Flanders Fields” is probably the most famous poem linked to this day.
In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
