1952 Dixie Fellowship (Area 6-B Conclave) Patch

The third Area 6-B fellowship meeting was held in 1952 at Camp Ho-non-wah with Unali’yi 236 serving as host lodge. This was the first event to be called the “Dixie Fellowship”.

In these days, it was customary to refer to this area’s fellowships by the name of the city where the host lodge’s council was located. Under that custom this would have been called the 1952 “Charleston Fellowship”. However Unali’yi had hosted the 1948 Area Z fellowship, already dubbed the “Charleston Fellowship”. It was felt that was confusing, so the event was called the “Dixie Fellowship” instead. This was originally intended to be used only in this year, but it stuck. The “Dixie Fellowship” was created.

Thanks to Jason Spangler (www.santeeswapper.com) for supplying the images for the Area Z and Dixie Fellowship patches used on this blog.

After the 1950 reorganization, Area 6-B consisted of western North Carolina and most of South Carolina. According to McLean and Riddle’s A Golden Legacy: A 50th Anniversary History of the Dixie Fellowships the following lodges were in Area 6-B in 1952:

  • Santee 116
  • Tsali 134
  • Atta Kulla Kulla 185
  • Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188
  • Muscogee 221
  • Un A Li’yi 236
  • Skyuka 270
  • Catawba 459

There seems to be some confusion over when Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 was moved from Area 6-A to Area 6-B. MacLean and Riddle show this lodge being in Area 6-B on their maps, but do not include it in the list of lodges in this area. Area 6-A did not meet in 1950 and 1951.

After this year’s area fellowship, the areas were reorganized and South Carolina was split between Areas 6-B and 6-C.     This sundering of the South Carolina lodges would continue until the 1973 SE-3B conclave.
