Tomo-Chi-Chi 119 eR1969-1

Sometimes “the thing” does not speak for itself. The patch listed as the eR1969-1 for Tomo-Chi-Chi 119 is an example of this.

Looking at this patch it would seem a reasonable conclusion that it was issued for an event hosted by Tomo-Chi-Chi lodge .     Both the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) and the lodge’s council (CEC refers to Coastal Empire Council) are referenced on the patch along with the lodge’s name.     The only remaining questions would be:   “Who was Kim?” and “What is a Trailoree?”

Lanny Rhodes, a brother of Tomo-Chi-Chi, recently wrote me to tell me that such a conclusion is wrong.     This patch was not issued by the lodge.     At the time, the council had a Tomo-Chi-Chi district.     This patch was issued for an event in that district.

I make it a general principle to follow whatever is the most recent edition of Blue Book on this site, even if it is wrong, for the sake of consistency.     I add notes to descriptions to correct errors or misconceptions.     A note will be added to this item’s description noting that it is not an issue of Tomo-Chi-Chi lodge.

It may not be the most popuplar solution, but in order to avoid the problem of this being listed again in the future as a “undiscovered” issue of the lodge, and to make it clear to future collectors that this is not a lodge issue even though it clearly looks like one, I suggest this patch be relisted in the next Blue Book (or whatever follows it) as eYR1969-3.     The description should include that this is a district, not lodge, issue.     The entry for eR1969-1, should be deleted with the description changed to read something like “Not a lodge issue; now listed as eYR1969-3″.
