UNC National Champions Flap

UNC National Champions Flap

My covert sources within the “Tar Heel Nation” have informed me that some in Occoneechee lodge may be considering yet another flap.     This flap would honor the UNC men’s basketball team winning the National Championship.     Yes, it’s a bit premature but these things need to be worked on in advance.

The flap design would be a break from the lodge’s recent tradition of showing modernized versions of their totem.   Some old timers within the lodge are upset at the cartoonish look of many of the lodge’s issues.           So this issue returns to a much simpler and more traditional design.

Others are annoyned that many of the lodge’s recent issues seem to feature purple and gold, the colors of Eastern Carolina Unversity (ECU).     It’s been pointed out that there are many universities within the lodge’s boundaries that are more prominent and esteemed than ECU.     Some have questioned whether university colors matter when designing patch design and think this is just silly.

I suggest this design be modified so as to clarify the purpose of this flap.     It needs to include a reference to both the year (2009) and sport (men’s basketball) in which UNC is the national champion.     Perhaps the phrase, “2009 NCAA Men’s Basketball Champions” should be put along the bottom.     The lodge might even want to consider a version of this flap as a monochrome in light blue.     The proceeds from this second flap could be used to help fund the new lodge building at Camp Durant.

This flap, if issued, would certainly spark a lot of discussion and passion within the North Carolina patch collecting community.         It would be both loved and loathed by local collectors.

Yes, this is a joke.   I have no idea if anyone within the lodge is really considering such a flap!

The blue monochromatic flaps with a light blue background didn’t sell all that well, nor did the light blue bullion….So I doubt this will EVER happen….Get them whine boxes ready!!!

Bravo Bravo. I think it’s about time we got some color other than ECU Purple in the mix. This is a great idea, however, I don’t see the patch czars changing the prominent ECU theme. Note that the lodge ordered just shy of a million blue CS flaps and none of the bullions trade. I dont care what color they are.

Let’s put things in the proper prospective for the entire viewing audience….

ECU purple = Thunderbird head color too–no way around that.

Just shy of a million = 500 CS flaps ordered.

None of the bullions trade = Not many other lodges have them to trade for and most folks don’t even know what a bullion is.

Sour grapes = sour grapes no matter how you try to sweeten them. Just be glad you have a storng lodge and we have money from patch sales to send some youth to places they otherwise wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go to.

Why use a fictious name to make comments?
