Atta Kulla Kulla 185 X21?

Atta Kulla Kulla lodge was one of three lodges in SR-5 to issue only an odd-shape for this year’s Dixie Fellowship, along with Tomo Chi-Chi 119 and Muscogee 221.

Their issue is a rather simple design featuring the lodge’s whippoorwill totem.     This is a part of a four patch set, with the lodge’s events issues for this year.     When pieced together, all four patches will form a large circular design with a whippoorwill in the center.

The listing data for this issue are as follows:

Gone Home: Doug Krutilek

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on May 11th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

I just received word from Craig Leighty that at 2:11am this morning, Doug Krutilek passed away peacefully after a long struggle with cancer.

He was the long time treasurer for ISCA and an active member of the NOAC museum staff. He was the one that managed to keep all the chaos and paperwork of the museum under control. His hard work, wit and good cheer will be sorely missed.

Funeral and memorial arrangements are not yet finalized. I am told the OA Broken Arrow ceremony will be performed. All Scouts and Scouters in the area that wish to attend are encouraged to wear their Scout uniforms.

Further details will be found on his Caring Bridge blog. It will be updated with the latest news as it is available.

Catawba NOAC Set Ordering Information

Catawba 459 S99?+X18?

As a general rule, I don’t usually advertise a lodge’s patch.     I have made several exception for personal friends, patches from my area, and items I find particularly interesting or well done.

I recently wrote about Catawba’s 2009 NOAC set.     This was intended by the lodge to be a fundraiser set.   It is a visually appealing set with a patriotic theme.     I expect it will trade readily at NOAC.   Larry Banks has passed along an order form for this set and asked that I share it here.       Click the link below to view and save the order form for this set.

Are there too many posts to handle? Maybe you missed out on a great post. Here’s a quick digest of the top posts from last week that you may want to check out:
  • A Ship Called “North Carolina”
    Posted on Tuesday, May 5th, 2009 in Klahican 331 – Views: (68)
Klahican lodge will soon be issuing eight patches honoring ships called North Carolina.       The eight pieces are four flaps and two two-part sets.   The sew outs and ordering information for these were on display at the SR-7B Conclave.
  • Lodge 188: 2009 Dixie Fellowship Delegate Set
Posted on Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 in Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 – Views: (76)
Back in March I wrote about a set of patches issued by Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge for the then upcoming Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave).     A second set, using the same basic design appeared at Dixie and served as a “delegate” set.
  • Lodge 331: Cook Crew Patch
    Posted on Monday, May 4th, 2009 in Klahican 331 – Views: (54)
There are still more items that were spotted at the recent SR-7B conclave yet to be covered in this blog.     I return to the theme of cook crew patches for the first such patch issued by Klahican lodge.     I have not seen this item until conclave, so I presume it was first issued within the last year or two.

Tomo Chi-Chi 119 X4?

Tomo Chi-Chi 119 X4?

Tomo Chi-Chi lodge took us to the movies with their patch for the 2009 Dixie Fellowship.   They were one of three lodges — along with Atta Kulla Kulla 185 and Muscogee 221 — that only issued an odd-shaped patch for this year’s conclave.   All the other lodges issued at least one flap.

I guess “Heronwood” is supposed to be the South’s version of Hollywood.     Don’t let the movie and TV companies in Wilmington, NC get wind of that! ;)

Bob White 87 S39?

Bob White 87 S39?

Bob White lodge issued a single flap for the recent Dixie Fellowship.     “Sixties Dixie” was their theme, taking us back to those years when tie-dyed clothes were popular for the first time.         I’m sure the youth of the lodge had fun with this theme.   As far as I know the lodge did not follow 2008′s precedent and only issued a single flap.

Tsali 134 S64?

Tsali 134 S64?

Tsali 134 issued three patches in conjunction with last month’s Dixie Fellowship.     Thanks to both Hank Birdsong and Greg Grimes for sending me scans of these pieces.

The first two Dixie issues were flaps.   Tsali joins the short, but growing, list of lodges who have patterned patches after US currency.     The “S64?”, pictured, with a dark green inner border was a trader issue.         A second flap, “S65?”, had a gold mylar inner border and was their “delegate flap”.

Lodge 560: Dixie, Anniversary and NOAC Flaps

Eswau Huppeday 560 S49?

Eswau Huppeday 560 S49?

Eswau Huppeday hosted the 2009 Dixie Fellowship at Cap Bud Schiele.     Several new flaps from that lodge appeared there.     This included a service lodge flap for the Dixie Fellowship, a set of three flaps for the lodge’s 45th anniversary, and their first 2009 NOAC flap.

The first of these was the service lodge flap, “S49?”.   The design is a modernized version of the lodge’s first flap design.     A brother could get one flap, or earn the right to purchase a flap, based upon his participation of various events in preparation for the conclave.     The lodge published a list of these events on their website.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.

Gone Home: Matt Kirkland

It is with shock and sadness that I pass along this message Tim Brown forwarded to me this morning:

With deep regret I must announce that my son, Matthew Thomas Kirkland, 31, passed from this world at 9:30 this evening. Matt suffered a massive stroke last night. We are having Matthew cremated and will hold a private ceremony in Memphis at a later date. For those who knew Matt, if you desire, to make a donation to the Transatlantic Council, Boy Scouts of America in his name. http://www.tac-bsa.org/Home.html

Matt was a significant contributor to this site, especially for Black Eagle lodge 482. He will be missed. Read the Full Post
