I would hope I don’t have to tell too many people what happened on June 4, 1944.     There has been a lot of coverage of events marking this anniversary all day in the media.   However, there has been less coverage of the actual event being marked on this day.   General Dwight D. Eisenhower explained to his troops what they were about to do:

You will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41.

The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeat in open battle man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground.

    Lodge 118: New Standard Flap

    Wahissa 118 S29?

    Wahissa 118 S29?

Wahissa recently changed manufacturers for its patches.     As a result, when they reordered their standard flap (S22) a significantly different patch was returned.   It has been suggested this is different enough to merit its listing as a new issue of Wahissa lodge.

There are a few easy ways to spot differences between the S22 and this new flap.     The most notable of these are the styling of the fleur d’lis and the embroidery of the beads underneath the pipe.    On the S22 there is  no crossbar on fdls and the beads are sloppy with outlining.   On the newer flap the fdls have distinct crossbars and the beads are neatly and vertically embroidered without any outline present.

These sets continue with the patriotic themes Catawba lodge is using on this year’s patches.   The blue bordered trader set depicts Mount Rushmore.  The red mylar bordered set recreates “The Spirit of 1776″.   On both sets, humans have been replaced by anthropomorphized hornets.       I expect all three sets will be eagerly sought by traders at NOAC.

The listing data for these sets are:

    Skyuka 270 Cherokee Chapter A1?

This is yet another new issue sent to me courtesy of Brad Hutto.   This time we have a new chapter patch from Cherokee Chapter of Skyuka lodge.

The simple but effective design shows a map of Cherokee chapter, bisected by the Broad River,   including the cities of Gaffney and Blacksburg, South Carolina.

The listing data for this patch are as follows:

This is another of several images Brad Hutto recently sent of new issues from South Carolina.   This time, we have a chapter event patch from Atta Kulla Kulla lodge.

As in 2008 Ca-nu-pa  chapter issued a patch for the District Camporee, called a “retreat” in 2009, that they ran.   I do not know if a second staff patch was issued as in 2008.

Brad Hutto recently sent word of two new odd shaped patches from Skyuka lodge.    One was the lodge’s 2008 Executive Committee and the other for the lodge’s 65th anniversary in 2009.

The Executive Committee patch uses the same design scheme as the 2008 events issues.   The most significant change is that the black border has been changed to light gray.

The 65th anniversary patch is in the shape of the central part of the lodge’s double headed thunderbird totem that has appeared on many of the lodge’s issues.   The lodge name and the year, 2009, are ghosted in the blue background.  The fleur d’lis is ghosted in red.

The listing data for these two issues are as follows:

    Lodge 270: White Border Fake

Larry Banks sent me an image a few weeks ago of what we believe is a fake, or unauthorized issue of some sort from Skyuka lodge.

No issue  known issue from this lodge uses this color scheme — white cut edge border with a white background.   However, the S2 has a gray border with pale blue background.  The creator of this patch may have patterned his work after the S2 image on this site.  It is rather dark and someone not familiar with the descriptions might assume the patch had a white border and background.  This leads me to the disturbing conclusion that the creator of this fake may have based his work upon an imperfect understanding of my site.

    An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

    Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

    Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.

    Gone Home: Matt Kirkland

It is with shock and sadness that I pass along this message Tim Brown forwarded to me this morning:

With deep regret I must announce that my son, Matthew Thomas Kirkland, 31, passed from this world at 9:30 this evening. Matt suffered a massive stroke last night. We are having Matthew cremated and will hold a private ceremony in Memphis at a later date. For those who knew Matt, if you desire, to make a donation to the Transatlantic Council, Boy Scouts of America in his name. http://www.tac-bsa.org/Home.html

Matt was a significant contributor to this site, especially for Black Eagle lodge 482. He will be missed. Read the Full Post
