Cayuga County Council Loses Charter

Bill Mulrenin recently reported on his blog about a proposed merger between Hiawatha Seaway and Cayuga County Councils.     Now he reports more dire news for those in the Cayuga County area.     Cayuga County Council has lost its charter from the BSA.

The Auburn Citizen reports:

Boy Scouts in Cayuga County may be reporting to a Boy Scouts of America council in a neighboring county in the future instead of the Cayuga County Council, even though no merger took place.

The national council did not renew the Cayuga County Council’s charter when it expired June 30, Director of the Northeast Area Steven Smith said this week. The national organization no longer recognizes the council and directed the regional branch to reassign all of the scouting units to the Hiawatha Seaway Council…

…In essence, the national organization usurped the Cayuga County Council’s authority. The council’s board of directors tabled a resolution to merge with Hiawatha Seaway during a special meeting June 25 and did not establish a date for another vote. Hiawatha Seaway’s board had already approved a merger during its meeting June 10 by a vote of 32-1.

Someone forgot to tell the council executive board and chartered organization representatives in Cayuga County Council that failure to vote for the merger was not an option!

The Auburn Citizen continues:

…The regional council called for a merger because the Cayuga County Council has too few units, Smith said. An approval from both councils to merge would have provided a seamless process for the disillusionment of the Cayuga County Council, he added.

But it appears that did not happen. In a transaction filed with the county last week, Charles Bouley Jr., Michael Ferro and Walter Love, listed as trustees, took ownership of the headquarters at 7235 Mutton Hill Road, Sennett, acquiring it from the council for $1….

There is apparently a poor choice of words in that above quote.     I believe the reporter meant a seamless process for the dissolution of the council, not its disillusionment.

In accordance with the BSA’s general policy of one OA lodge per council I expect this will result in the loss of the charter of Tahgajute lodge.     Hiawatha Seaway Council is served by Kayanernh-Kowa lodge.         Barring any other arrangements   Tahgajute lodge   will be absorbed into Kayanernh-Kowa when its charters lapses at the end of this year.       Brothers in Tahgajute will become brothers of Kayanernh-Kowa lodge.

In 2007 Tahgajute’s membership stood at a mere 58 brothers.     At that time it was the sixth smallest OA lodge in terms of membership.
