Lodge 270: More NOAC Issues
Skyuka lodge appears to be in the running for the most NOAC patches issued by a lodge in the Carolinas. Back in the Spring of 2008 the lodge issued four two part sets as fundraisers for this event, with a design that was reminiscent of a classic Coca-Cola commercial. Now Brad Hutto tells me the lodge has issued three more sets: a trader set, a delegate set, and a set for Founder’s Day.* This brings them to a total of 14 pieces for NOAC, so far easily the most for any lodge from the Carolinas.
The first of these sets, S42?+X24?, is designated as their trader set. The flap features a dragon. The matching dangle is a sword shaped patch. Beyond the obvious “Skyuka” in the middle of the name, Brad did not know the meaning of “BRSKYUKANGR”.
The second set, S43?+X25? (pictured), is the lodge’s delegate set. The dangle for this set is shaped like a dragon’s body and is double sided.
The third set, S44?+X26? (pictured, right), is designated as their Founder’s Day set. I do not know if this means the set will not appear at NOAC until Founder’s Day. The flap in this set follows a more traditional design scheme for the lodge, showing the lodge’s double-headed thunderbird totem. A fire breathing dragon is shown on the chevron.

*Founder’s Day, as it’s commonly referred to, is a bit of an annoyance to me. I believe it should be Founders’ Day, honoring the two primary founders of the Order: E. Urner Goodman and Carroll A. Edson. Oddly the Order refers to Goodman as the founder and Edson as the “co-founder”. There are interesting stories behind this, many of which are probably legends. However, I note how can just one of them be a “co-founder”? Either both are founders or both are co-founders. Co-founder in this context has come to mean something like “the guy who really helped out a lot but didn’t have the same personal magnetism as the founder”. Maybe lodges should institute the “Co-Founder’s Award” for the brother who has done great work for the lodge, but never basked in the glory or public recognition that should have been his due.

Bravo on the Founder’s (Founders’) comments. Col. Edson does not get the recognition he deserves….He as much a part of that first idea session, that first “Tap Out”, that first induction ceremony as our dear Doctor but his name has only come up a few times at all the meetings/sessions that I have attended her at NOAC.
