Rush Limbaugh, Roger Ailes, and the Boy Scouts

Posted in Current Events by John E. Pannell on November 12th, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Wednesday night (11/11/09) Rush Limbaugh was in New York to attend the banquet at the Westchester-Putnam Council.     According to Limbaugh, his good friend, Roger Ailes, chairman and CEO of the Fox News Channel, was presented with the council’s “2009 Good Scout Award”.   Limbaugh introduced Ailes.

Limbaugh says this about the Boy Scouts:

…I was a Boy Scout once, for a year.   But one of the reasons I wanted to go was because the values that are the Boy Scouts are American values, traditional American values.   That room last night, as I said in my remarks before presenting Roger, that room was America, and it’s values like that are going to save this country…

Limbaugh also played on his show Thursday a brief quote from Ailes’ acceptance speech:

…Every generation gets called to meet a challenge. This generation will as well. I am heartened to know that what the enemies of America don’t know is that someday they will meet the courage, resilience, dedication of these young Americans we are so proud of, and they will keep America free…

A Pittance of Time

Posted in Current Events by John E. Pannell on November 11th, 2009 at 2:29 am

On this Veterans Day, and the 91st anniversary of the end of World War, please take a few moment to remember those whose service to this country throughout the years helped to preserve and defend this nation.   It’s just a pittance of time.

Twenty Years Later

Posted in Current Events,Personal Stuff by John E. Pannell on November 10th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

The world was a very different place 20 years ago.   Europe was divided between two opposing powers, engaged in a “Cold War” for decades.     Germany was split in two.     A wall split its former capital, helping to make those in East Germany prisoners in their own country.     Then the wall came down and all was changed.

Last Summer those who attended NOAC were told about the Power of One.     In this case, it was the power of a few:   those who dared to dream of freedom for Germany and Europe and who lead others towards that end.

New York Lodge Chief Dies

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on November 4th, 2009 at 5:50 pm

I received word that the chief of Ashokwahta lodge, Iroquios Trail Council, died while traveling home from a Scout event. The following announcement was made on the Iroquois Trail Council website:

The Council is saddened by the passing of Scouter Austin J. Boyd, who was killed in a traffic accident while traveling home from Wednesday evening’s camp kickoff. Many of you knew Austin in his role as the current Lodge Chief of the council’s Order of the Arrow Ashokwahta Lodge and from his prominent roles on the summer camp staff over the past several years. An Eagle Scout, Austin was an Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 59 of Clarendon and a member of Venture Crew 42. Austin will be sorely missed. Austin’s family has asked that we extend this invitation to all Scouts and Scouters: “A memorial service will be held to celebrate the 19 years we shared with Austin James Boyd on Saturday, November 7. The service will be held at Disciples United Methodist Church, 4410 Holley Byron Rd (Route 237) Holley, NY 14470 beginning at 4:00pm.

2009 marked a big change in the alignment of W-1C.   When the new designations came out, W-1C lost two lodges and became W-1E.   Gone are the two lodges that are home based in Idaho, and that makes W-1E conform to the old borders of 11-C.The conclave this year was held at Camp Fife (Grand Columbia Council), which is in the shadow of Mount Rainier.
  • Never Assume

There is an old adage about what happens if one assumes.     Randy   Holden recently gave me an example of why one shouldn’t assume.A few years ago this privately made patch bearing the name and number of “Unilachtego 107″.     Given the history of lodge 107 and what was already published in Blue Book, and a proclivity for the recycling of some old lodge names, I assumed this was a predecessor lodge to Kon-Kon-Tu 107 that never had an authentic issue.

2009 W-1E Conclave Report

The conclave this year was held at Camp Fife (Grand Columbia Council), which is in the shadow of Mount Rainier.   The first time in awhile that a council camp was used as a conclave site.   It was a great weekend with plenty of sunshine and decent temperatures. (It did get down to below 32 degrees Saturday Night, which caused frost on my windshield.)

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
