A while back, before I started having all the recent troubles with the site, Greg Grimes sent me images of three new standard flaps Occoneechee lodge issued earlier this Fall.     They are rather “retro” in design for this lodge, featuring the designs and color schemes the lodge previously used on their Ordeal, Brotherhood and Vigil flaps.

Our Founder’s Voice: Dr. E. Urner Goodman

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on December 20th, 2009 at 3:42 am

As the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is about to begin the celebrations of its centennial, expect a great effort to be made to preserve its history and make it available for posterity’s sake.     In the early years there were many great men involved with the BSA, with giant personalities, and whose significant contributions have last decades after their own passing.     Dr. E. Urner Goodman, founder of the Order of the Arrow, was one such man.

I recently saw this video posted on another blog and thought I needed to share it again.     This very popular and moving video was first shown at the 2006 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC) Center for History.     It contains edited remarks from Dr. Goodman originally delivered at the 1954 and 1956 NOACs.       The words are just as meaningful today as they were a half century ago.     Wisdom does not become dated with age.

Among other things, Dr. Goodman tells us of the great danger involved with founding the Order in 1915.     He then went on to describe three specific dangers:

  1. The danger of the clique;
  2. The danger of the oligarchy;
  3. The danger of the boss.

The threat from those three dangers — both within the Order and our society in general — are just as great today as in 1915, or in the 1950s when these remarks were delivered.     Be on guard for them

Lodge 270: New Standard Flap

Skyuka 270 S45?

Skyuka 270 S45?

First Occoneechee lodge issued their three “retro” flaps, now I have word that Skyuka lodge has issued a new standard flap that harkens back to their S2.

The lodge has used this basic design for nearly a half century, since their F1, but I do not believe they have returned to this color scheme for a standard flap until now.   This flap has been modernized.     A light blue fleur d’lis has been added.     Also the flap has a rolled edge border instead of the cut edge on the classic flap.

Thanks to Brad Hutto for word and the image of this issue.

Brotherhood Barn: Fireplace of Cheerfulness

Brotherhood Barn: Fireplace of Cheerfulness

I thought this was published back on November 24th, but it appears I never released it to the blog….

Morty Fink has reported that the Brotherhood Barn, located in Bondville, VT, on what was once E. Urner Goodman’s Summer home is undergoing extensive repairs and renovations.     The barn has suffered somewhat from the ravages of time over the years.     He has posted online several photos of the barn in its current state.

Among Morty’s photos are several of the “Fireplace of Cheerfulness”.     This fireplace is constructed, in part, of stones donated by various OA lodges.

I believe the property is currently owned by Ted Goodman, E. Urner Goodman’s son.     I do not know what the Goodman family’s long term plans are for this property, but I hope this fireplace will be preserved for posterity’s sake.     This barn has a special significance in the history of the Order of the Arrow and should be preserved for posterity’s sake if possible.

Wahissa 118 Atakulla Chapter R1

Wahissa 118 Atakulla Chapter R1

An R1 from Atakulla Chapter of   Wahissa lodge recently sold (partial screencap) on eBay for a price that I’m sure made the seller very happy.   Thanks to Homer Dearmin for tipping me off here.

After what looks like a heated battle between three bidders, the final closing price was $387.65!     I thought we were in the midst of the worst recession in decades and patch prices were falling!     Shall we take bets on how long it will be until someone else finds one of these to sell online? ;)

Congratulations to the seller for realizing a great price for this patch.     Congrats to the new owner for his successful acquisition of a dearly desired item for his collection.

This is the second arrowhead for Klahican’s ceremony team.   It uses the same basic design as the previous patch, A1, but with some changes in color.     The border is changed to red, the fleur d’lis to blue, and the background to a darker shade of green.     In addition the text has been rearranged.

The listing data for this item should be as follows:

These were created in an attempt to emulate the style and feel of the older Swiss issues from this lodge.     From what I’ve seen they did a reasonably good job at that.       These are quite a change from the style of the more recent CD OBV flaps.

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

I have added special pages on this site for the 2011 Indian Summer and 2011 Summit Corps. I still have a few images to add but most of what I have images for is now on the site. Thanks for Rick Horne for most of these images.

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
