Nayawin Rar 296 S53? + X3? with CSP

A few months ago Nayawin Rar issued three sets for the BSA’s 100th anniversary.     Thanks to Wesley Drennan for sending me the images.   It’s only my fault they haven’t appeared before now.     I still have more new recent issues from Nayawin Rar that will appear in a future post.

Each of these sets were issued and sold with a Tuscarora Council CSP.     The silver mylar (SMY) and gold mylar (GMY) bordered sets were sold at a premium, highly restricted in quantity, and individually numbered.   100 SMY bordered sets were issued.     Just 25 GMY bordered sets were produced.

The listing data for these are as follows:

Atta Kulla Kulla 185 eX2010-3?

The stream of new issues from the Carolinas continues, and I haven’t even touched the SR-7B and Dixie Fellowship lodge issues yet.       Atta Kulla Kulla lodge recently has issued three event patches for their 2010 Spring Fellowship and two Dixie Fellowship work days. They also have issued a scholarship patch for Camp Old Indian.   Once again thanks to Brad Hutto for news and images of these pieces.

Each of these patches is an octagon.   The scholar patch depicts the Indian head used to symbolize Camp Old Indian.   The events patches each depict the lodge’s totem and Indian head logos similar to those used on past lodge and National issued patches.

Lodge 560: 2010 Dixie Fellowship & New Standard Flap

Eswau Huppeday S54?

Eswau Huppeday S54?

This won’t be news for those who were at the Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave) last weekend.   Eswau Huppeday has recently issued two more flaps.     One is a new standard issue.   The other is the lodge’s Dixie delegate flap.     Thanks again to Jimmy Arthurs for these.

The Dixie “Delewet” flap follows upon the watery theme the lodge is using this year and already depicted on this year’s activity patches.     Observant readers familiar with this lodge’s issues will notice several allusions to design elements found on this lodge’s earliest flaps.

Lodge 236: 2009 Events Patches

Unali'yi 236: 2009 Events Patches

Unali'yi 236: 2009 Events Patches

Unali’yi lodge issued several patches for its 2009 lodge events.         Along with patches for the 2009 Dixie Fellowship and 2009 NOAC these were intended to be pieced together to form a totem pole design.   This “puzzle patch” idea is not new to Unali’yi lodge, having previously done something similar in 2004 and 2007.     Thanks to Brad Hutto, again, for the images.

Section conclave and NOAC items are listed in the main body of lodge issues since these are not lodge events.     So, in order to insert these into their proper places two of the lodge’s NOAC issues will need to be renumbered.   The other items will be listed as lodge events.

Listing data for these pieces should be as follows:

    Atta Kulla Kulla 185 R7?

Atta Kulla Kulla lodge issued four pieces earlier this year for its 70th Anniversary.     This include a round, a two piece set (flap and chevron), and a neckerchief.   The round and neckerchief are also issues for the BSA’s centennial. The neckerchief, round and flap prominently feature the lodge’s totem.     The chevron features the crescent moon and palmetto, symbols of South Carolina.

Thanks as always to Brad Hutto for news and images of these pieces.

    Atta Kulla Kulla 185 Ca-Nu-Pa / Sahkanaga eX2010?

I still have lots more patches from the Carolinas to report on.   This is before I can even start getting into the issues from the SR-7B and SR5 Conclaves from this month.       This item is a joint issue of Ca-Nu-Pa and Sahkanaga   Chapters of Atta Kulla Kulla lodge.     Thanks to both Brad Hutto and Darrell Green for sending me images of this.

Normally chapter issues don’t get a lot of interest except within the lodge to which the chapters belong.     There are exceptions for more highly collected lodges — Black Eagle springs to mind — or for patches with very unusual designs.     This patch could fall into a third category:   BSA Centennial issues.     What do you Centennial collectors   — especially those in SC — think?

As this was a joint issue, I will double list it under both Ca-Nu-Pa and Sahkanaga chapters.     The listing data for this patch are as follows:

    Eswau Huppeday 560 J15?

    Eswau Huppeday 560 J15?

This is another new issue from the treasure trove of images sent me by Jimmy Arthurs.   Eswau Huppeday recently issued their   newest cook team patch.       Except several significant color changes, this patch is identical in design to the previous Cook Team patch, listed on this site as “J14?”.

I’m waffling on how to label the border color for this patch.   In my opinion it should be a goal of any descriptive system to describe items so that they can be readily identified.   (Don’t wind me up here… please)     A principle of parsimony should apply.   This could mean that the labels, such as of colors, may not be the most technically accurate if such accuracy only complicates identification of patches.     My eyes see something like “copper” as an accurate, but confusing description, possibly more reflective of how I see things than actual color. Keeping that in mind, the easy answer for the border color on this issue is “red brown”, RBR.

Jimmy Arthurs also recently sent word of two patches from Eswau Huppeday’s Allowelendam chapter that were not yet on this site.   Once again, thanks to him for his help.

The first of these, issued in 2008,   is similar in design to the patch previously listed as “R1?” except for some changes in color.     The most easily described change is the change in border color from brown to turquoise.     The second patch was issued for the chapter’s 2009 Allowelendam Corp (sic).

    An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

    Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

    Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.

    Gone Home: Matt Kirkland

It is with shock and sadness that I pass along this message Tim Brown forwarded to me this morning:

With deep regret I must announce that my son, Matthew Thomas Kirkland, 31, passed from this world at 9:30 this evening. Matt suffered a massive stroke last night. We are having Matthew cremated and will hold a private ceremony in Memphis at a later date.
