WV Guard to Support BSA Jamboree

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on February 28th, 2012 at 9:43 am

During the three decades that the Boy Scouts of America held their National Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill they benefited from a large amount of military support.   Not only was the Jamboree held on a military base but US military personnel also contributed untold thousands of man hours of labor in support of this event.   The BSA would not benefit from this support at the Summit.

Kentucky Council Closes Its Doors

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on February 27th, 2012 at 9:23 pm

I received word this afternoon via patch-l that Shawnee Trails Council (Owensboro, KY) will shut down at the end of March.   All units in the council will be transferred to Lincoln Heritage Council (Louisville, KY) .   This is not a merger.  Reportedly Shawnee Trails Council will exist for sometime after this date in order to wrap up its affairs.  From the sounds of it, the council is being dissolved.

There is no word of this on the council’s website.   However, that site appears not to have been updated since last October.

Michigan Lodge Merger

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on February 26th, 2012 at 9:52 am

News from the first lodge merger in Michigan, part of what I have dubbed the Great Michigan Merger, has been announced.

According to Dan Jechura, the Manitous 88 (Great Sauk Trail Council #255, Ann Arbor) and Nacha-Mawat 373 (Southwest Michigan Council #270, Kalamzaoo) lodge creation teams are proud to announce the creation of a new lodge. The new lodge name will be Kishahtek Lodge and will use the number 88. The lodge totem will be a Wolverine.

According to the “Scouting in Michigan” page on Wikipedia, these two councils have already merged into “Field Service Council C”, part of the Greater Michigan Council, with a permanent name to be determined by the end of February 2012.

No further details are known at this time.

Lodge 296: New Standard Flap – Issue or Variety?

Posted in Nayawin Rar 296,SR-7B Lodges by John E. Pannell on February 25th, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Nayawin Rar 296: S52 Varieties?

Nayawin Rar lodge recently issued a new version of their standard flap.   Instead of using the BSA’s Supply Division, AB Emblems produced the flaps.   The lodge intended the flap to remain unchanged, but as usually happens when a different manufacturer is used, there were noticeable changes.    Thanks to Wes Drennan, both flaps are pictured at the head of this post.   Also thanks to Charlie Aman for previously tipping me off on this new flap.

I have previously listed this newer version on my site as “S52b?”, and the previous version as “S52a?”.   I am re-thinking that.

As you can see there are many differences between these two patches: the shade of yellow in the moon, the coloring of the bird’s right wing, the pattern of the black lines in the body and wings, the shade of light blue, and the height of the “296″.   In my opinion, most of these would be hard to describe so that someone unfamiliar with the patches would know which he has without a reference collection.

I have just added a page to this site  showing lodge issues for this Summer’s National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC).  You may view it here:

http://www.oaimages.com/noac12.shtml

Presently on a few issues are shown.   If you know of any that should be added, please let me know.   This list should grow rapidly as we get closer to NOAC.

Nayawin Rar 296 S62?

Nayawin Rar 296 S62?

As I was adding posts last week for the patches issued for the 2009 – 2011 Order of the Arrow Regional and National officers, I also added the first two images of patches issued for a 2012 officer.   Nayawin Rar has recently issued two flaps in honor of David Joyner, the 2012 Southern Region Chief.   Thanks to Charlie Aman for sending these images to me.

The red bordered version of this flap (S62?) is available to the general membership of the lodge.  The yellow bordered version (S63?) will be distributed only by the region chief at his discretion.

Aal-Pa-Tah 237: 2012 Uncut Year Set

Aal-Pa-Tah 237: 2012 Uncut Year Set

Aal-Pa-Tah Lodge 237 is commemorating its 70th anniversary in 2012, with its activity patch set for the year.  At the recent Palm Beach Trade-O-Ree, a complete set of activity patches and the anniversary flap were sold in auction to one impatient collector who could not wait all year to obtain the full set one piece at a time.  Each of the weekend pieces of the year’s activities are one letter of the word “GATOR”, as well as a segment of an alligator.  Once the full set is assembled, the word is spelled and the alligator is complete.  The year patch is the log upon which the gator lays, fitting like a jigsaw puzzle with the feet of the gator.  There will also be an “uncut” set available, with all of the pieces together as one patch.

Lodge of the Western Region Chief Patches: Update

Posted in Patch Collecting by John E. Pannell on February 18th, 2012 at 6:47 pm

Back in 2007 I wrote several posts highlighting the patches issued by the various lodges over the years for the national and regional officers of the Order of the Arrow.   The first of these posts covered patches issued for the Lodge of the National Chief.   I also published an update for the 2008 National Officer patches.    Over the past week I have also added updates for the recent national and regional officers.  Here is the last installment for the recent Western Region Chiefs.

Echockotee Lodge 200: 2012 Winter Fellowship

Echockotee Lodge 2012 Winter Fellowship

Echockotee Lodge 2012 Winter Fellowship

The 2012 Winter Fellowship for Echockotee Lodge 200 was the first weekend of their annual series of activity patch theme, “Camp Shands Structures”.  Camp Shands is where Echockotee has been holding its weekend activities since 1968.  The Winter Fellowship patch depicts the “tree houses”, a coveted site at Shands where campers sleep in small cabins set about 12 feet off the ground.  The name and date of the event have been embedded into the design, in the lower right corner.  Other patches in the series will depict the camp chapel, council ring, climbing tower, a cabin, and the camp water tower.

The irony to this series that the Winter Fellowship may be the last lodge weekend event held at Shands for several months.

April Fool!

It should go without saying that my post about this site being sold to a Google/eBay partnership was my annual April Fool's post. I have no plans at this time to give up or sell this web site. Long time readers will know this has become quite the tradition here and I usually start planning the posts several months in advance. The most famous (infamous?) of these was 2008's post concerning the abolishment of lodge names. It still creates difficulty from time to time for those in authority in the OA and BSA due to the inability of some to detect obvious (in my opinion) satire.

OAImages Soon Under New Ownership

This post contains important information regarding the future of this website. Please read carefully.

Many have noticed that I have found it hard to maintain this website for quite some time now. Due to various reasons, some of them beyond my control, updating the price guide regularly has become all but impossible. Things have become a bit less chaotic, but after 15 years this has become a chore. I also know that there will come the day when control of this site will need to be passed to another. With all that in mind, I have been considering various options for the future of OAImages. In the midst of this, a several months ago I was contacted by someone who made me an offer that was too good to resist. After many months of negotiations I am now free to announce that this site has been purchased by a combined partnership of Google and eBay. This will be effective July 1, 2012.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.
