Long Beach Lodge Holds Ordeal; Name & Totem Chosen

Posted in Scouting News by John E. Pannell on May 20th, 2012 at 1:48 pm

Last Winter I posted that a new OA lodge was being formed in Long Beach Area Council.   Now I am pleased to report that Tico Perez has passed along news to me that this new lodge has held its first Ordeal.   38 candidates have become the first Ordeal members inducted into this lodge with the help of three lodges from southern California.

The brothers have chosen the name Puvunga, translating as “The Gathering Place”.  The lodge totem will be the porpoise.   I eagerly await their first lodge flap.   Given the totem choice, a talented artist could create an outstanding flap.

"The first nonabsolute number is the number of people for whom the table is reserved. This will vary during the course of the first three telephone calls to the restaurant, and then bear no apparent relation to the number of people who actually turn up, or to the number of people who subsequently join them after the show/match/party/gig, or to the number of people who leave when they see who else has turned up.
The second nonabsolute number is the given time of arrival, which is now known to be one of the most bizarre of mathematical concepts, a recipriversexcluson, a number whose existence can only be defined as being anything other than itself. In other words, the given time of arrival is the one moment of time at which it is impossible that any member of the party will arrive. Recipriversexclusons now play a vital part in many branches of math, including statistics and accountancy and also form the basic equations used to engineer the Somebody Else's Problem field.
The third and most mysterious piece of nonabsoluteness of all lies in the relationship between the number of items on the bill, the cost of each item, the number of people at the table and what they are each prepared to pay for. (The number of people who have actually brought any money is only a subphenomenon of this field.)"

Long Beach did indeed hold a very successful Ordeal this weekend at Camp Tahquitz with the help of lodges from W4S. My personal thanks goes out to those Arrowmen who helped us with our first Ordeal. Without their help and hard work this would not have been possible.

Total candidates in atttendance for the Ordeal numbered 51, 38 youth and 13 adults. This brings the Lodge membership to approximately 70.

A special guest, Mr Ray Capp National Chairman of the Order of the Arrow was in attendance and presented the Puvunga Lodge 32 its first charter. Also in attendance was Mr. Steve Bradley Vice Chairman, Region and Section Operations Western Region whose help has been inmeasurable in making this happen.

Look for images of the first flap in the coming weeks. The design of the flap will be based on an image submitted by one of our Arrowmen.
