Seminole (85) 75th anniversary 1936 – 2011

Posted in Florida Lodges,Kiondashama 85,Seminole 85 by Robert Mathis on February 20th, 2011 at 8:39 pm

2011 marks the 75th anniversay of the Order of the Arrow in Gulf Ridge Council (Tampa, FL), for Seminole Lodge 85 and its predecessor, Kiondashama.  Together, this lodge is the oldest in the state of Florida.

To mark the anniversary, Seminole has issued its flap (S-57).   The design depicts the older and more current versions of the lodge totem, the ibis, as well as the a pine tree, presumed to be the totem of the short-lived Kiondashama.  Also to be issued for the anniversary will be a bullion (available in March).

    Seminole Lodge 85 New Issues

Posted in Florida Lodges,Seminole 85 by Robert Mathis on May 6th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

As the host lodge for the recent 2010 Section S-4 Conference, Seminole Lodge 85 showed some restraint in the number of items created to commemorate their preparation for the event.   For flaps, the lodge issued two: the first (85 S52, pictured here) was unrestricted to host lodge members.   A second flap was available for those that met a service requirement (85 S53).

Seminole Lodge 85 Activity Patches 2010

    Seminole 85 J3?

    Seminole 85 J3?

Seminole Lodge 85 has a set of patches for their 2010 activities, with all of the weekend event patches available,  along with  the Year patch.   As luck would have  it, the year patch is undated, forcing it to also be classified as 85 J3.

The weekend patches are shaped to resemble feathers, with one for each activity.

Seminole Lodge 85 Fall Conclave 2009

Posted in Florida Lodges,Seminole 85 by Robert Mathis on October 19th, 2009 at 6:05 am

    085 2009 Fall Conclave

As previously mentioned here, Seminole Lodge 85′s theme for their activity patches for 2009 resembles a puzzle, with the design to resemble a bow and arrow.   While the third and fourth pieces have not yet been made available to me for scanning, here is the Fall Conclave patch.

The patch is 2 inches tall, and 11.25 inches wide.   Obviously, this patch is not meant to be worn on the uniform; putting a button loop on this thing would either cause an end of the patch to hang below the belt (vertical), or halfway around the back (horizontal).   And it breaks one of Rick’s Rules of Patch Design:   The patch should  fit on an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper.

    Seminole 85 2009 Spring Conclave

For the   2009 year, Seminole Lodge 85 has a new theme for their weekend activity patches.   This year’s items are a puzzle set, forming a picture of an arrow.   As of the 2009 Section S-4 Conference, the Winter Fellowship and Spring Conclave patches had been released.   The next two event’s pieces will complete the rest of the arrow. New Seminole 85 Flap

    Seminole 85 S49?

Seminole Lodge 85 has recently introduced their newest regular issue flap patch (tentatively titled S49).     Much like the design of S39, with the large ibis, the major difference between the two is that the new flap has glow-in-the-dark border and white design features on the bird.

Seminole 85: 2008 Activity Patch “Puzzle” Set

Posted in Florida Lodges,Seminole 85 by Robert Mathis on June 7th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

Seminole Lodge 85  has finally released their activity patches for 2008 (originally delayed due to manufacturer problems).    Much like all but one year of their activity patch sets since 2001, this is in the form of a puzzle set, with all six pieces coming together to form a large fleur d’lis.   Each patch has the name of the particular event, as well as an image of a Seminole leader and  an ibis (the lodge totem).    What is lacking on each patch?   The year.   Hopefully, this will be not be a multi-year set.

    Lodge 85: Winter Fellowship Gorget

Posted in Florida Lodges,Seminole 85 by John E. Pannell on October 19th, 2007 at 5:23 am

85wf99gor-f.jpgBob Mathis recently sent me these images.   I thought them so neat that I thought I’d share them here on this blog.

A while back I was carrying on here, as is my wont, about special issue low run patches and how they are being faked.   I opined that lodges should look for other ways than patches to reward special achievements.   I believe there are better ways to recognize brothers than by presenting them with a “special”, but still cheap, flap.

With that in mind, I share what Seminole 85 gave the attendees of their 1999 Winter fellowship.     It’s a gorget.     No patch was produced for this event.     While it can’t be sewn onto a uniform, jacket or patch blanket it can be worn with either the Scout uniform or ceremonial/dance regalia.

    Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

    An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

    Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

    Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
