Longest Serving Lodge Chief

Posted in Miscellaneous by John E. Pannell on November 15th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

In “modern” times, the Order of the Arrow has a strict policy that its officers must be under 21 for the entirety of their term in office. This includes all offices from the chapter level all the way to the National Chief. It has the effect of restricting the pool of qualified candidates for those offices of greater responsibility. Even so, from time to time, a lodge will have a two term chief. Some section chiefs are re-elected. I have known one three term section chief. In recent years, due to exceptional circumstances, a young man served for more than a full term as a regional officer, though this is normally prohibited by National policy.

This strong tradition of youth leadership at all level was not always the policy of the Order of the Arrow. In earlier years, officers in the Order of the Arrow could be over 21 years of age. In some cases they were *well* past their 21st birthday. Along those lines, Bill Topkis recently asked a trivia question of his friends online:

Who was the longest serving lodge chief?

Of course he knew the answer. Can anyone else take a guess? Until we have had some input, I request that those who were involved in that other conversation withhold the answer for a while.

July 16, 1915. The first Order of the Arrow induction ceremony was held on this date at Treasure Island.     From that humble beginning comes the Order of the Arrow as we know it today.

    Is Cub Scout Uniform Fashionable?

Posted in Miscellaneous by John E. Pannell on July 3rd, 2007 at 3:50 am

I was particularly bored earlier tonight.   While wasting time wandering about the internet I ran into a picture of Seth Green at Wizard World Philadelphia.     This apparently was a comic convention held in 2005.    Green is probably best known for his portrayal of Scotty Evil, Dr. Evil’s son, in the Austin Powers films.

What caught me was  his rather unexpected wardrobe choice:   A Cub Scout uniform shirt!

    From The Kekeenowin

Posted in Miscellaneous by John E. Pannell on July 1st, 2007 at 10:54 am

At the SC TOR, I bought a copy of the The Kekeenowin of the Wimachtendienk, by Terry Grove (groveagle@cfl.rr.com).     It is an history of the ceremonies of the Order of the Arrow from 1915 through 1948.   I have slowly started to read through the book and find it very interesting on several levels.

Though the structure of the Order of the Arrow and its ceremonies are vastly different, the roots of what we know as the Order today can be plainly seen.     Any serious student of the ceremonies or OA historian should own a copy of this work.

In the book Terry Grove gives the text from the “Report of Committee on Ordeals and Ritual 1921″.     It was this committee that decided upon the name of Unami lodge.   There was also another problem to be deal with.  During the Summer of 1920 interlopers  had access to the Ritual.     This report piqued my curiosity on a few levels.

For those, like me, who are too young to remember and for those who are not adequately taught American  history today in our schools here is what President Franklin Roosevelt said 63 years ago today.     Imagine the reaction if any national leader gave this same speech today!

Update: Hear FDR in his own words.

    Memorial Day 2007

Posted in Miscellaneous by John E. Pannell on May 28th, 2007 at 1:46 am

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure ” — Thomas Jefferson, letter (November 13, 1787)

Let  us not forget, on this hallowed day,  those men and women whose ultimate sacrifices have secured our freedom and propserity.

Memorial Day was first observed in the aftermath of the Civil War to pay homage to those  Union soldiers who died during the course of that war.     A separate memorial day was observed in many states — and still is — for those who died in service to the Confederate States of America.

First officially proclaimed as a day of remembrance in 168 by Gen. John  A. Logan,  the proclamation for Memorial Day read thusly: Continue Reading »

Be Careful What You Write in Email…

… You never know who will see it.

Articles have been written about folks who send out emails that they later regret.     Either the writer is intemperate in his comments, sends the email to the wrong person, includes unintended recipients, finds it later forwarded to people he didn’t want to see it, or all of the above.     I, personally, have felt this regret.

    Recent OAImages News

    Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

    An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

    Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

    Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
