On May 1-2, 1954, Octoraro Lodge #22 hosted the Area 3A Pow Wow near Rising Sun, Maryland at Camp Horseshoe, which had been the site of the first Area E meeting in 1948. A yellow plastic neckerchief slide was issued for the event; the slide has the horseshoe logo of the camp, but does not indicate the date of the event.

1954 Area 3A Slide Artwork

Also pictured here is what appears to be the original artwork for the slide. Interestingly, this artwork does show a date; it appears that the date was somehow left out when the slide was manufactured.

Camp Horseshoe in 1954 saw a much smaller group of lodges than had been at Camp Seven Mountains the year before. The lodges of northeastern Pennsylvania split off as the new Area 3D, and the lodges of central Pennsylvania–including 1953 3A host Monaken #103–split off as the new Area 3E.

One lodge was added, however; after meeting with Area 3C in Virginia in 1953, Nentico #12 returned to Area 3A in 1954. Camp Horseshoe is less than twenty miles from Baltimore’s Broad Creek Scout Reservation, and the lodges that remained in Area 3A were generally closer to Baltimore than the lodges of Area 3C.

1954 Area 3A Luggage Tag

The seven lodges in Area 3A in 1954 were:

Unami 1

Minsi 5

Nentico 12

Octoraro 22

Ajapeu 33

Delmont 43

Pohopoco 44

As might be expected of the area including Unami Lodge #1, Area 3A contained many lodges with long and distinguished histories. Delmont #43 and Pohopoco #44, both founded in 1929, were the “youngest” lodges in the group.

Amangamek Wipit #470 moved to the Northeast Region in 1983; except for a brief interval in 1994-1997, the other Virginia lodges and their successors have continued to share a section to the present day, where they make up Section SR-7A.

In 1950 Nentico Lodge #12 hosted the lodges of eastern Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia for the Area 3A Fellowship Pow-Wow on April 29-30 at the two-year-old Broad Creek Scout Camps in Whiteford, Maryland. The event featured the first known piece of Area 3A memorabilia, a burned wooden slice neckerchief slide saying “Broad Creek” and “WWW”.

Literally hundreds of different wooden “slice” neckerchief slides were issued at Broad Creek between 1950 and the mid-1970s. The design of the 1950 3A slide was also used for a camp slide that year–the camp slide has “BSA” where the 3A slide has “WWW”–and continued to be used for dated slides each summer through 1969. The camp ranger in 1950 is credited with having made the original burned slides.

The 1950 3A slide is not, strictly speaking, the rarest of the Broad Creek “slice” slides; in the late 1960s and early 1970s, unique slides were designed and made for individual staff members. However, the 3A slide is the most highly sought-after of the Broad Creek slides, and the 1950 slide is among the rarest of the 3A meeting items.

When Nentico hosted the 1972 3A conference, the front cover of the booklet featured small reproductions of the booklets from earlier area conferences at Broad Creek. The simple typewritten cover of the 1950 3A booklet described the event as the “Fellowship Pow-Wow”.

There are four arrowhead-shaped patches, all with button loops. Three have a white background and indicate “Ordeal”, “Brotherhood”, and “Vigil”; the fourth has a light gray background and says “Staff”.

The “Staff” patch is distinct from the already-listed A2 in two key ways: the background is light gray (instead of white) and the term “Lodge 12″ is ghosted (instead of red).

I have photos as shown here of the Staff and Brotherhood issues. I have seen the Vigil issue (but did not get a photograph), and I have been told the Ordeal issue exists (but do not recall having seen one).

These will likely be listed as the A3 through A6 issues from the chapter. Blue Book style data are as follows:

I have finally been able to scan one this week; I saw it briefly at last summer’s lodge picnic, but was unable at that time to get either an image or enough notes to have a good description. Nentico started using district-based chapters in 1980; several chapter issues have commemorated anniversaries, including the piece pictured here issued by Chesapeake Chapter in 2000.

The patch is round, a bit over three and a half inches in diameter, with a stylized depiction of the triangular stone fire ring in the lodge’s ceremonial circle. This is the second patch from Chesapeake Chapter; the first was for the chapter’s tenth anniversary, and is an oval which was for a short while mistakenly listed as a round. It is unclear whether this issue will be listed as the R1 or as the R2 to avoid confusion with the earlier listing. Blue Book style data is as follows:

Nentico Lodge #12 was the host. This was the last event for Section NE-4C as it is currently constituted. Starting this summer, Nentico, Nentego #20, Guneukitschik #317, and Amangamek Wipit #470 will form NE-6A, while Susquehannock XI and Tuckahoe #386 will join three other lodges in NE-6B.

The conclave had a NASCAR theme, with “Broad Creek Shoot Out” and a racecar on the patches and a great race event between the lodges on Saturday afternoon.

In 2007 NE-4C produced an unprecedented number of patches, and 2008 saw the proliferation continue. The basic patch sold in the trading post and via pre-order had a black border. One green-bordered patch was distributed to each delegate and staff member at registration. The trading post also sold a black-bordered jacket patch and a red neckerchief with the conclave patch attached.

The participation award was a checkered-flag pin that could be attached to the patch.

There were also two restricted patches; fifty of each were issued.

A silver-mylar-bordered patch was given out by the Section Chief, and a gold-mylar-bordered patch was given out by the Conclave Coordinator.

Four complete framed sets of pocket patches (black, green, gold, and silver borders) were auctioned over the course of the weekend.

The faker is selling out of Germany under the name
patch--world
(with two hyphens).

This morning I found the patch pictured here, a fake of the hard-to-find Nentico Lodge #12 X4. The most obvious difference between the fake and the real X4 is that the fake is computer-made and of modern manufacture. In addition, the arrowhead is significantly different: the X4 arrowhead is more rounded and has details where the head and shaft join, while the fake arrowhead is more pointed and lacks any details at the base of the arrowhead.

The fake will probably be categorized as the ZX1. The likely Blue Book information will be:

While the CSP debuted at the Lodge Picnic, there was no picnic event patch issued this year.
