This won’t be news for those who were at the Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave) last weekend. Eswau Huppeday has recently issued two more flaps. One is a new standard issue. The other is the lodge’s Dixie delegate flap. Thanks again to Jimmy Arthurs for these.

The Dixie “Delewet” flap follows upon the watery theme the lodge is using this year and already depicted on this year’s activity patches. Observant readers familiar with this lodge’s issues will notice several allusions to design elements found on this lodge’s earliest flaps.

The new standard is the lodge’s most recent variation on traditional designs. The shield in the central part of the design is a new addition, previously used on the lodge’s bullion (B1).

This is another new issue from the treasure trove of images sent me by Jimmy Arthurs. Eswau Huppeday recently issued their newest cook team patch. Except several significant color changes, this patch is identical in design to the previous Cook Team patch, listed on this site as “J14?”.

I’m waffling on how to label the border color for this patch. In my opinion it should be a goal of any descriptive system to describe items so that they can be readily identified. (Don’t wind me up here… please) A principle of parsimony should apply. This could mean that the labels, such as of colors, may not be the most technically accurate if such accuracy only complicates identification of patches. My eyes see something like “copper” as an accurate, but confusing description, possibly more reflective of how I see things than actual color. Keeping that in mind, the easy answer for the border color on this issue is “red brown”, RBR.

I previously wrote about the trader flap (F13?) Eswau Huppeday issued for this Summer’s NOAC. Now David Cody has shared with me three more patches the lodge has issued for this event. These include two different delegate flaps, and a large triangular patch issued on a neckerchief.

The first delegate flap (F14?) is similar to the previously issued flap except for the RED felt, instead of light blue, used for the background.

The second delegate flap (S53?, pictured) was for those who completed the required advance paperwork and attended the lodge’s NOAC contingent meeting. The design uses the “Spy vs. Spy” theme that was previously used for their Dixie Fellowship flap. I had been customary in recent years for the lodge to use similar themes for both its Dixie and NOAC flaps. The fleur d’lis is hidden on the left side of the brown ground.

<img style="float: right;" title="Eswau Huppeday 560 P2?
The third piece is a neckerchief patch. This is a large triangular patch with a design similar to the two felt flap. It is issued on a dark blue neckerchief with red piping.

These will be added to the checklist on this blog for SR-7B and SR-5 NOAC issues.

Eswau Huppeday hosted the 2009 Dixie Fellowship at Cap Bud Schiele. Several new flaps from that lodge appeared there. This included a service lodge flap for the Dixie Fellowship, a set of three flaps for the lodge’s 45th anniversary, and their first 2009 NOAC flap.

The first of these was the service lodge flap, “S49?”. The design is a modernized version of the lodge’s first flap design. A brother could get one flap, or earn the right to purchase a flap, based upon his participation of various events in preparation for the conclave. The lodge published a list of these events on their website.

Eswau Huppeday 560 S50?

The lodge also issued an Ordeal, Brotherhood and Vigil flap in honor of its 45th anniversary, “S50?” through “S52?”. This might prove a minor source of controversy. Order of the Arrow national policy, as published in Operations Update 97-08, explictly states “…There will be no honor distinction denoted by the flap or flap border…” Still, some lodges have managed to gain approval from the BSA’s “patch police” and issue such flaps. The most recent previous example of this covered here were the first flaps of Pocumtuc lodge.

These three flaps also feature three more modernized versions of the lodge’s S1 design. The Ordeal flap depicts a sunset.. The Brotherhood flap has a nighttime scene. The Vigil flap shows a sunrise . The top part of the flap reminds me of the lodge’s S4 design. The flaps are also differentiated by the use of an Ordeal, Brotherhood, or Vigil Honor arrow in the top part of the design.

As an aside: It’s a bit odd that Eswau Huppeday decided to buck policy by issuing an OBV set. In its 45 year history, the lodge has never before issued such flaps. Could it be that they just wanted to be rebels?

Eswau Huppeday 560 F13?

The last flap at this time is a NOAC flap, “F13?”. The design, embroidered on felt, features a Cherokee headdress superimposed upon the lodge’s crossed tomahawk and rifle totem. If recent conferences are a good guide we should expect at least one more patch from this lodge for NOAC.

Jimmy Arthurs knows I collect and like bullions so he sent along an advance image of the bullion that will be issued for the 2009 Dixie Fellowship. The item is in hand but has not issued it yet. It is worth sharing here nonetheless.

I’m impressed with how this turned out. The colors are striking for a bullion and is a nice take on the design of this lodge’s early flaps. The color scheme is rather similar to that on the 560 M1.

My only possible complaint revolves around my opinion of the construction. The B1 is very thick and substantial in the style of earlier OA bullions and even more contemporary local pieces like the 459 B1. From a higher resolution image I have, this item appears to be much thinner and not as sturdy, rather like the 104 bullions. It appears delicate and I wonder how it will stand up over time. I guess I need to wait until I actually get my hands on this.

As it has now been confirmed, this item is an issue of SR-5 and not Eswau Huppeday lodge. As such, it does not get included in the lodge’s issues in Blue Book or this site.

Eswau Huppeday 560 will be hosting this year’s Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave) at Camp Bud Shiele. The lodge’s first flap for this event has just been issued. A second flap is being produced for those who participate in the work weekends leading up to the conclave.

The patch design is rather unusual and I was told there was some difficulty in getting this approved by the BSA. The flap uses caricatures that allude to a battle and the reason for the lodge’s totem of the crossed tomahawk and rifle.

During the Summer at Camp Bud Shiele the totem is explained through the re-enactment of a fictitious battle between the Catawba (symbolized by the rifle) and the Cherokee (symbolized by the tomahawk). After the battle members of the tribes erect a pile of rocks by a river to symbolize their friendship. The rocks placed by a river are shown on several of the lodge’s early flaps, including their S1. With the weapons hidden behind the two Indians’ backs, the scene depicted on this flap does not appear nearly as friendly!

Eswau Huppeday lodge has been sponsoring an annual American Indian dance and culture seminar since at least 1986 called the Carolinas Indian Seminar (CIS). It draws several hundred attendees from the eastern United States. It is not restricted to OA or Scouting groups. All interested in American Indian dance and culture are welcome to participate.

Many other lodges have hosted similar events. The earliest OA patch I know for such an event may be for the Sundance Camp, later Sundance Fellowship, hosted by Canaliño 90 in 1946. Having recently hosted their 24th annual CIS, Eswau Huppeday lodge may have the longest currently running event of this nature.

Each year Eswau Huppeday issues at least one patch for this event. The first one, 560 eA1986-1, is pictured at the top of this post. All the patches follow a similar design and color scheme. Each has a black border, light blue background and prominently features some type of American Indian dancer.

To use a cliche, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. In recent years several lodges have issued patches that appear to emulate Eswau Huppeday’s design scheme. Certainly putting an Indian dancer on a patch for an American Indian Seminar is not a particularly unusual idea. I find it interesting to see the number of lodges, even using original designs, have patches that emulate the 560 issues in shape, color and style.

Coosa 50 eA2009-1?

Coosa 50 in Alabama recently hosted their fourth American Indian Seminar. Each year the pocket patch has been arrowhead shaped and prominently featured an American Indian dancer. The 2009 patch, show on the right, features an old style dancer.

Pellissippi 230 eA1996-3

Pellissippi 230 has also hosted an Indian Seminar. Based upon the patches that are known to me this does not seem to be strictly an annual event. Patches are listed for this event for 1990, 1996-1998, and 2003. The 1996 through 1998 issues are very similar in design to 560′s CIS patches. The 1996 patch, featuring an adult fancy dancer with a young girl, is pictured to the left. The shape was modified for the 1997 and 1998 issues.

Ti’Ak 404 hosted an Indian Seminar for a few years in the early part of this decade. The last known patch, eX2005, is an arrowhead shaped patch featuring a fancy dancer. The 2002 and 2003 patches may also follow the same general scheme but I do not have images of them.

Amangamek-Wipit 470 has intermittently hosted an Indian Seminar since 1979 based upon the patches they have issued. Their 2002 patches, eA2002-3 and eA2002-4 emulate 560′s design scheme using a slightly modified shape.

Given the large number of different dancers and styles used, I do not believe these are stock items. If someone wanted to a nice display could be made of these various patches. The 560 items might take a bit of work to acquire since there are many of them and some of the staff patches might prove more difficult to find.

Do you know of any others that should be included here?

Now Indian Waters Council has issued “Centennial CSP” in the same color scheme. Thanks to Jeff Cook for supplying the image of this piece. Are we seeing the start of a trend? Do you know of any other councils or lodges that have issued patches in this same color scheme?

There has been an odd hole in the Blue Book listings for this lodge’s event patches for 1981 and 1982. Eswau Huppeday lodge had been consistently issuing events patches since the mid-70s. I als knew that patches had been listed in these years as I had pricing data for them. However until now I had no images for these pieces. Thanks again to Larry Banks for sending along these images.

This update covers six previously unlisted events patches from Eswau Huppeday lodge. There are two from 1981 for the lodge’s Spring and Fall Fellowship. There are three from 1982 for the lodge’s Spring Fellowship, Fall Fellowship, and Winter Banquet. In addtion there is one for the 1983 Winter Banquet.

It is interesting that central design element of the 1983 Banquet patch bears more than a passing similarity to this lodge’s 1986 NOAC flap (S12). Also the pink border of this patch would appear to be a nod to the lodge’s 1983 Section Conclave flap (S8), which caused quite the storm when it appeared at the SE-7 Conclave that previous Spring.

The Winter banquet patch, whose design is shown at the bottom right of the jacket patch, has not yet been issued. Traditionally, Eswau Huppeday’s Winter Banquet takes place on the first Saturday of January. So, their 2008 Winter Banquet will happen in January 2009. Maybe they do that just to make my head spin?

This is the third of a series of post covering recent issues from Eswau Huppeday lodge. Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs for sending word of these patches and the images.

Eswau Huppeday lodge has issued a new jacket patch for members of their Cook Team. It is only obtained by meeting the service requirements as established by this lodge.

Eswau Huppeday has a few different jacket patches that are earned by performing various types of services for the lodge. These include ones for their dance team, ceremonies team, and cook team/crew. These designs are generally used for several years and a new design is created only when stocks of the preceding design are depleted. The cook team is the most frequently earned of these as evidenced by the number of different jacket patches the lodge has issued in recent years for it.

Neither “BSA”, a fleur d’lis, nor any other indica of the Boy Scouts of America are on this patch. Listing data for these two patches are as follows:

Eswau Huppeday lodge has issued a new patch for their Elangomat Nimat program. As is customary with the lodge, the patch is designed to fit in with the theme of the year’s activity patches. When looking at just this patch, that is not obvious but it will be made more clear in a later post.

I have placed this in the lodge listings just before the two Camp Bud Schiele patches I recently wrote about. These would have first been used at the lodge’s Spring Ordeals, before the start of the Summer camp season. Listing data for this patch are as follows:

This is the first of a few posts I will be making over the next several days covering recent issues from Eswau Huppeday lodge. Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs for sending word of these patches and the images.

Following the practice of the past four years, Eswau Huppeday produced two CSPs (council shoulder patch) shaped patches for Camp Bud Schiele. In past years there was only one CSP but this year they added a second “staff” patch, pictured here.

Upon reading the comments to another recent post, it seems many may not regard this patch as a lodge issue, but I disagree. Since it was issued by the lodge, I consider it a lodge issue regardless of its shape or use.

The lodge name does not appear on these patches. Rather “WWW 560″ is in dark blue on the dark blue background beside the US and North Carolina flags. Listing data for these two patches are as follows:
