Tomo Chi-Chi lodge issued two odd-shaped patches for last Spring’s SR-5 Conclave, the Dixie Fellowship. One of these is a bright pink monochrome, guaranteed to rile some Scouters and Scouts*. Both have the same design. Thanks to Alan McDonald for these images.

The lodge adopted a lovely theme for this year’s Dixie Fellowship and decided to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day in April. I have accidentally deleted Alan’s email, but I believe the pink monochrome version of this was a “delegate” issue with the full colored version being the more common of the two. If any readers can correct me on this, please do so.

*Pink patches tend to get Scout leaders and some youth riled up. Some deliberately choose to use pink just because of that reaction: the brighter the better! I get a laugh from items like these. Some day I really need to write a post about the history of pink patches here in the Carolinas! For those who think this them is inappropriate, I’ll just remind them to remember how all OA brothers have been admonished for the past 95 years.

The two flaps and the two dangles each use similar designs however the flap and dangle within each set do not match. The flaps each depict gaming pieces. The trader flap’s background is the familiar black and white design of a chess board. The delegate flap’s background is the traditional red and black of a checker board. The trader dangle pays tribute to the lodge’s 70th anniversary. The delegate dangle honors the BSA’s centennial.

Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs for sending word a while back of three more issues from Itibapishe Iti Hollo previously unknown to this site. All were produced in very limited quantities and prove difficult for more collectors to acquire.

The first of these is a third flap for the 2009 Dixie Fellowship. It was an error of the “S56?” with a white (WHT) border. I am told the lodge kept and issued about 25 – 30 of these. Since a significant quantity was kept and issued by the lodge, I believe this should be listed as a regular lodge issue rather than a reject (Q category) or prototype (Y category). The 2009 Dixie Fellowship delegate and trader sets were previously reported on this blog.

The other two issues comprise a fourth two part set for the 2009 NOAC. The other three sets were previously reported on this blog. This set has a silver mylar (SMY) border. It is reported that 25 of these sets were issued and sold for $25 each.

In order to insert the Dixie Fellowship flap into its proper place, the 2009 NOAC flaps were renumbered and are shown in italics in the table below. The listing data for these issues are as follows.

I do not own any of these NOAC sets. Can any readers confirm whether the borders on these are a complete rolled edge? It almost looks as if the bottom edge of the flaps and top edge of the chevrons might be cut edge. Thanks.

This should be the last post about Skyuka lodge for a little while. Thanks to Brad Hutto, again, for sending images of the first 2010 events issues for this lodge. The lodge chose a “throwback” theme for this year’s events issues with the patches replicating designs of classic Skyuka issues.

The first of these is for the lodge banquet. It is a throwback to the lodge’s x3 and is dated 2009, instead of 2010. I am awaiting word as to whether this is a misdated issue or whether it should be listed as a second lodge banquet issue for 2009. Many lodges hold their banquets during the Christmas holiday season, and some hold their “year end” banquet in January of the next year, so it is not that unusual for a lodge to have two banquets in a year. If this really is the last event issue of 2009 instead of the first of 2010, I will edit this post accordingly.

The second of these is for the 2010 Lodge Games. This is a throw back to the lodge’s X1. “Lodge Games 2010″ is in white across the top and at the bottom left corner of the patch.

As with the earlier issues, both patches have the same odd shape that features the lodge’s double-headed thunderbird totem, along with an American Indian and what appears to be a Scout in an early uniform. I notice I do not have an image of a 2009 Spring Fellowship patch. I don’t yet know whether the lodge didn’t issue a patch for this, if I have it in my “backlog” or if I just haven’t been sent an image of it yet.

If anyone can confirm or deny the existence of a Spring Fellowship patch, please do so in the comments. If there is a patch for this event, I will update the listings and add it to this post.

Quick on the heels of my recent post and renumbering of the Spartan Chapter issues of Skyuka lodge, I have one more to add to the list. This also is courtesy of Brad Hutto.

This patch, the first chevron from this chapter, was issued in 2009 and is dated. Even with the date, since no event is named this will be listed as the chapter’s “X12?”. The design features an interesting interpretation of the lodge totem combined with a palmetto tree and profile of SC.

Tsali lodge has established a tradition of excellence over the last several years in both Group Dance and Southern Drum, winning awards for both at the Dixie Fellowship and on a national level. The lodge issued four flaps and two CSPs in honor of their achievements at the 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC). Thanks to Hank Birdsong for the images and news of these patches. At the risk of promptly being proven wrong, these may be the last patches issued for the 2009 NOAC.

Four flaps were produced, two each for the Group Dance and Southern Drum teams. Two CSPs were also issued. The red bordered flaps and CSP were sold individually at lodge functions. The gold mylar (GMY) bordered flaps and CSP were only sold as a set of 3 for $25. The flaps feature symbols and items special to the Cherokee nation: the seven pointed Cherokee star, war club, hatchet, door bar, and twisted raw hide logo. The seven pointed star also appears on the CSPs.

The first is a new jacket patch, “J6?”, issued earlier this year. The design is similar to the “J4?”. There are some minor color differences. The most significant change is the removal of the two fleur d’lis that flanked the words “Order of the Arrow” on the “J4?”.

The second patch is the lodge’s 2009 Fall Fellowship patch. This patch follows the basic design scheme the lodge has used for the past several years.

Though I’m slowly catching up it almost seems as if there’s no end to the list of issues from the Carolinas that still need to be added to this site and blog! Brad Hutto recently sent word of a Spartan chapter issue that managed to escape listing here for about three years. As always, thanks to him for the news and image.

It was issued after this chapter’s “x4?” and before what had been listed as the “X5?”. The design is similar to the “X4?” except for the RED border. Since none of these have yet appeared in Blue Book, I do not consider the numbers to be official and fixed. So, instead of inserting a fractional number, eg. X4.5, for this issue I will label this Spartan Chapter’s X5 and number all subsequent issues (see previous X5?, X6?, X7? – X9?, and X10?) accordingly.

The stream of new issues from the Carolinas continues, and I haven’t even touched the SR-7B and Dixie Fellowship lodge issues yet. Atta Kulla Kulla lodge recently has issued three event patches for their 2010 Spring Fellowship and two Dixie Fellowship work days. They also have issued a scholarship patch for Camp Old Indian. Once again thanks to Brad Hutto for news and images of these pieces.

Each of these patches is an octagon. The scholar patch depicts the Indian head used to symbolize Camp Old Indian. The events patches each depict the lodge’s totem and Indian head logos similar to those used on past lodge and National issued patches.

Following Blue Book custom and practice, the Camp Old Indian scholarship patch will be listed as an “X” under the lodge issues. The other three will be listed with the lodge events patches. Four more patches similar designs to these will be issued later this year.

The Dixie “Delewet” flap follows upon the watery theme the lodge is using this year and already depicted on this year’s activity patches. Observant readers familiar with this lodge’s issues will notice several allusions to design elements found on this lodge’s earliest flaps.

The new standard is the lodge’s most recent variation on traditional designs. The shield in the central part of the design is a new addition, previously used on the lodge’s bullion (B1).

I still have lots more patches from the Carolinas to report on. This is before I can even start getting into the issues from the SR-7B and SR5 Conclaves from this month. This item is a joint issue of Ca-Nu-Pa and Sahkanaga Chapters of Atta Kulla Kulla lodge. Thanks to both Brad Hutto and Darrell Green for sending me images of this.

Normally chapter issues don’t get a lot of interest except within the lodge to which the chapters belong. There are exceptions for more highly collected lodges — Black Eagle springs to mind — or for patches with very unusual designs. This patch could fall into a third category: BSA Centennial issues. What do you Centennial collectors — especially those in SC — think?

This is another new issue from the treasure trove of images sent me by Jimmy Arthurs. Eswau Huppeday recently issued their newest cook team patch. Except several significant color changes, this patch is identical in design to the previous Cook Team patch, listed on this site as “J14?”.

I’m waffling on how to label the border color for this patch. In my opinion it should be a goal of any descriptive system to describe items so that they can be readily identified. (Don’t wind me up here… please) A principle of parsimony should apply. This could mean that the labels, such as of colors, may not be the most technically accurate if such accuracy only complicates identification of patches. My eyes see something like “copper” as an accurate, but confusing description, possibly more reflective of how I see things than actual color. Keeping that in mind, the easy answer for the border color on this issue is “red brown”, RBR.
