Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update
Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.
I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.
The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

A Guide to Identifying Chinese Fakes on eBay
My friend Jason Spangler, also known as the Santee Swapper and host of the Scouting Hot Finds newsletters and podcast has assembled a free guide to spotting the fake Chinese made OA patches currently appearing on eBay.
A Guide to Identifying Recent Chinese Fakes on eBay
This is an extensive 24 page treatise on these patches, with many illustrations. It documents the fakes produced by various sellers over the past several years. It also discusses the marketing strategies of those who produced these fakes including the stealing of images from this website.
This is a must read for almost any collector who wants to avoid being taken by these fakes.

Imitation is the Sincerest Form of Flattery (III)
[caption id="attachment_6836" align="alignleft" width="90" border="0" caption="Wahunsenakah 333 Piankatank Chapter Winter 2011 Service"]
I have written several posts on this blog about patch designs that appear to have been copied or "inspired" by other designs, quite often from different lodges. For example see the first and second posts using this same title. Another example is this post on more "inspired" patches.
The patch pictured at the top of this post was a recent chapter event issue from Piankatank chapter of Wahunsenakah lodge. (Editor's note: Please see correction in comments). The lodge is chartered to the Colonial Virginia Council which could easily explain the American Revolution theme of the design. However, the lodge totem is a duck so the hawk's head might appear to be an unusual choice.
A friend gave this to me. He acquired it a Trade-O-Ree and thought of me once he saw the design. It's obviously taken from Tsoiotsi Tsogalii's 2010 SR-7B conclave flaps, listed on this site as S34? and S35?.
Perhaps someone in Wahunsenakah can fill us in on the story behind Piankatank chapter's choice of patch design. The artist of the lodge 70 flaps should be flattered that someone in another lodge was so impressed by his design that he chose to adapt it for his chapter's event patch.

One of These Things Is Not Like the Other...
"One of these things is not like the others, One of these things just doesn't belong, Can you tell which thing is not like the others. By the time I finish my song?"
How many of you remember this song from "Sesame Street"? I saw a friend of mine at the Winston-Salem Trade-O-Ree last weekend. He usually has a great assortment of patches, many classic material and items from our area. However he wants it to be known that he isn't just interested in old patches, so he puts the frame pictured here on his table. I'll let him remain anonymous unless he chooses to step forward here.
One of those patches seems oddly out of place (really two but one sticks out more!). Do you see it? It's not quite as obvious as recognizing letters and numbers, but still very easy to see! Every time I see this frame I chuckle a bit. It's a good way to start a conversation. Now you all can join me in a good natured chuckle.

Of Thee We Sing... About Our Lodge
Last weekend I rode with Greg Grimes and Roger Ward and paid a visit to our mutual friend, Larry Banks. On the way there I was shown a book, published in 1938, given to members of Chappegat Lodge.
The book included the lodge by laws and rules. It included instructions on how to wear the "bands", as the OA Sash was called then, and lodge pin. Specifically, Brotherhood members were instructed that the bands and arrow on the lodge pin were to be worn pointed toward the left shoulder. It was also stated that the lodge pin could not be given to a non-member of either sex. This refers to the custom, still practiced today, of fraternity brothers giving their pins to their girl friends as a token of affection. The centerfold was the brother's membership certificate.
The music and lyrics of the OA song and the lodge song were also printed in the book.

“Wouldn’t you prefer a nice game of chess?”
– Joshua, War Games.
Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge decided to play games with their 2010 Dixie Fellowship issues. The lodge issued two flaps and dangles: a delegate and trader set. Thanks to Greg Grimes for these issues.
The two flaps and the two dangles each use similar designs however the flap and dangle within each set do not match. The flaps each depict gaming pieces. The trader flap’s background is the familiar black and white design of a chess board. The delegate flap’s background is the traditional red and black of a checker board. The trader dangle pays tribute to the lodge’s 70th anniversary. The delegate dangle honors the BSA’s centennial.

Thanks to Jimmy Arthurs for sending word a while back of three more issues from Itibapishe Iti Hollo previously unknown to this site. All were produced in very limited quantities and prove difficult for more collectors to acquire.
The first of these is a third flap for the 2009 Dixie Fellowship. It was an error of the “S56?” with a white (WHT) border. I am told the lodge kept and issued about 25 – 30 of these. Since a significant quantity was kept and issued by the lodge, I believe this should be listed as a regular lodge issue rather than a reject (Q category) or prototype (Y category). The 2009 Dixie Fellowship delegate and trader sets were previously reported on this blog.
The other two issues comprise a fourth two part set for the 2009 NOAC. The other three sets were previously reported on this blog. This set has a silver mylar (SMY) border. It is reported that 25 of these sets were issued and sold for $25 each.

Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge issued three two-part sets for this year’s NOAC. All three used the same basic ninja themed design, continuing with the theme used on their Dixie Fellowship and Spring Fellowship patches. Once again, thanks to Larry Banks for these images.
The first set, pictured, has a black background and rendered in shades of gray. The second set has a white border and background with the ninja rendered in shades of black, white and grey. The third set is similar to the second but with the ninja, border and lettering rendered with photosensitive thread.
Larry tells me there is also a fourth flap but I do not yet have an image of it. When I get that, a separate post will be written for it.
Listing data for these issues are as follows:

Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 X14?
Larry Banks recently sent me several images from North Carolina lodges that were not yet listed here. Among them is this patch from Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge. News of issues from this small lodge often does not reach me in a timely manner so it’s not unusual to hear about an item a year or so after it was first issued.
I presume this piece is similar in purpose to the “All Events” issues from Catawba 459 and some of the other pre-registration patches issued by other lodges. Therefore I have listed it as “X14?” placing it before the 2008 Dixie Fellowship issues. This means several other issues from this lodge will be renumbered on this site. If you catalogue your collections based upon the tentative numbers used on this site, please note and make any necessary changes.
The listing data for this patch, and all renumbered items are as follows:

Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 eR1996-2?
Word of new — and new to this site — issues from the Carolinas has been coming faster than I can blog about it lately. Here I have 1996 Spring Fellowship and Ordeals patches from Itibapishe Iti Hollo that have not been listed previously. Larry Banks sent these to me a few weeks ago but I’m only getting around to them now.
Itibapishe Iti Hollo is an oddity from a collector’s perspective in this part of the country. It’s a small lodge, tucked into south central North Carolina to the east of Catawba and south of Tsoiotsi Tsogalii. With those two large lodges as its neighbors one would think news of its patch issues would be more widespread, but it’s not. Its patches are not widely collected outside of the lodge area either and they tend to fetch low prices when they appear. Also, with apologies, I find the designs of most of their modern issues to be uninspiring. I believe it’s also the lodge that I receive the least input on for this site. So, it’s not unusual that these have not been listed here before this.

Back in March I wrote about a set of patches issued by Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge for the then upcoming Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave). A second set, using the same basic design appeared at Dixie and served as a “delegate” set. Thanks again to Larry Banks for sending these images.
The flap portion of this set shows a masked face, with only the eyes visible. The details on the bottom part of the patch are difficult to see in this scan due to the nearly monochromatic design . An American Indian in a canoe, used on many of the lodge’s flaps, is “ghosted” in black and red behind the “X” in “Dixie”. Across the top of the bottom piece is the lodge name, Itibapishe Iti Hollo, and “2009 SR-5 Conclave”.

Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge recently issued a two part set for the 2009 Dixie Fellowship (SR-5 Conclave). Thanks again to Larry Banks for sending these images. It appears the lodge has adopted a ninja theme for this year’s conclave, continuing the theme that was started with their 2009 Spring Fellowship patch that I posted about yesterday.

Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 eR2009-1?
Larry Banks recently sent me images of several issues from Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge. I don’t receive much news from this small North Carolina lodge, so any news or images is especially welcome.
These issued include a patch for the lodge’s 2008 Fall Fellowship and their 2009 Spring Fellowship. As far as I know the Fall Fellowship patch was the only events issue from this lodge in 2008.
Also included in this batch was the SMY border staff patch for this lodge’s 2007 LLDC. I first reported about this issue last July but didn’t have an image of the staff patch at that time.

- Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 Anson District/Chapter eR1976?
There has been some discussion among patch collectors lately over what makes a patch an OA issue. While this is usually pretty straightforward with lodge issues, the distinction often becomes murky with chapter and events patches. I plan to discuss this in a future post.
With that in mind I put forward two patches that might be chapter event patches from Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge. In some respects these appear to be OA items, but at the same time a good case can be made for them being district events patches. I do not have any good contacts in this lodge that can decisively attest to nature of these items.

The first item is pictured at the top of this post. At first glance it would appear to be just a camporee patch from Anson District. Notice that neither the council or lodge is named on the patch. However, the use of the “WWW” leads one to believe the lodge had something to do with this. Is this a chapter item or not?

- Itibapishe Iti Hollo 188 Concord District/Chapter eX1987?
The next item, pictured to the right, might appear to be just another event patch from the Concord District. However, note the inclusion of “O.A.” to the left of the tipi. In my opinion, it’s hard to make a convincing argument that this is not an Order of the Arrow issue of some sort. What other likely explanation would there be for “O.A.” to be included on the patch if it wasn’t an OA issue?
Several other patches from this district/chapter are already shown on my site.
The use of the word “district” instead of “chapter” on these patches is problematic. There are two other chapter pieces from this lodge that were included in the last Blue Book (2006). Both of these are from Rowan chapter, and are labeled on the patches as such. A third patch is shown on my site as an event issue but says “Rowan District“.
Considering these to be OA items, the listing data for these two piece would be as follows:
| Chapter |

It would be helpful if someone from lodge 188, or very familiar with the lodge’s activities in the 1970s and 1980s would step forward here. Can anyone confirm what these various patches are? Can anyone explain them or why various OA related design elements and words were used if they are not OA issues?

Itibapishe Iti Hollo lodge issued two patches for their 2007 LLDC. The BLU bordered participant patch is pictured here.
My events listings for this lodge are probably very incomplete as I don’t receive much information from this lodge about its issues. The tentative catalog numbers for these items will probably need to be changed if I receive word of other 2007 events issues from this lodge.

An OAImages iPad App?
Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.
I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st
It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.
I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam
This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.
Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.
I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.
I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage

Change in Comments Policy
This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.
Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
