Klahican lodge recently issued a flap for this Summer’s BSA National Jamboree.   Thanks to Bob Walton for sending the image of this flap.

The design features a nighttime beach scene.     The lodge’s totem, the Venus fly trap, is ghosted in the foreground of this flap.   It also apparently commemorates the BSA’s 100th anniversary.

The listing data for this patch are as follows:

Lodge 331: 2010 SR-7B Conclave

Klahican 331 S73?

Klahican lodge issued a single flap for the recent SR-7B conclave.     Thanks to Wesley Drennan for this image.

Except for Wahissa which generally does not issue patches for its conclave delegates unless it is the host, it has now become unusual for a lodge in SR-7B to issue only one patch.     This has made collecting the SR-7B conclave issues a bit more difficult than it used to be.

I wasn’t at conclave this year.     Based upon the flap’s design, it appears Klahican had some sort of medieval or knighthood theme.     The lodge’s Venus flytrap totem is in dark gray at the right side of the flap.

Klahican 331 A2?

Some time ago Bob Walton sent me an image of a new Ceremony Team arrowhead issued by Klahican lodge.     I’m only getting around to adding this to the site now.     Thanks to Bob for this news.

This is the second arrowhead for Klahican’s ceremony team.   It uses the same basic design as the previous patch, A1, but with some changes in color.     The border is changed to red, the fleur d’lis to blue, and the background to a darker shade of green.     In addition the text has been rearranged.

The listing data for this item should be as follows:

Klahican 331 F11?

A few weeks ago, thanks to Bob Walton, I was sent an image of Klahican’s offering for this Summer’s NOAC.     As far as I know this will be the only issue from this lodge.

Their traditional design has been modified to include additional text for the theme, year and location of NOAC.     The flap is embroidered onto a green twill, with a green rolled edge border that roughly matches the background.       The fleur d’lis appears to be in a darker shade of green.

A Ship Called “North Carolina”

Ship of the Line: North Carolina

Ship of the Line: North Carolina

Klahican lodge will soon be issuing eight patches honoring ships called North Carolina.       The eight pieces are four flaps and two two-part sets.   The sew outs and ordering information for these were on display at the SR-7B Conclave.

The ships depicted are:

  • The first North Carolina, one of nine ships of the line authorized by Congress in 1816.
  • The CSS North Carolina, a short-lived   ironclad gunboat that served in the Cape Fear River near Wilmington, NC.       This ship sailed under the flag of the Confederate States of America and is the only ship in the set that was not part of the US Navy.
  • The North Carolina (ACR-12), an armored cruiser that escorted troop transports during World War I. It was later renamed named Charlotte.
  • North Carolina (BB-52), was a South Dakota-class battleship, cancelled before launching.
  • North Carolina (BB-55), saw action during World War II. This ship is now permanently docked in Wilmington, NC.
  • North Carolina (SSN-777), a Virginia-class submarine launched in 2007.

Klahican 331 X5?

There are still more items that were spotted at the recent SR-7B conclave yet to be covered in this blog.     I return to the theme of cook crew patches for the first such patch issued by Klahican lodge.     I have not seen this item until conclave, so I presume it was first issued within the last year or two.

The design for this patch features one of the more unusual stews I’ve seen.     I am rather certain that Venus flytrap would be very tasty, even if it is Klahican’s totem.

The listing data for this item are as follows:

Lodge 331: 2009 SR-7B Conclave Flap

Klahican 331 F10?

Klahican lodge issued a single flap for this year’s SR-7B conclave.     Of the five lodges in the section that issued patches for this event, Klahican was the only lodge to have just one issue.

The design of the flap illustrates the “Batman” theme the lodge adopted for the conclave.     The patch seemed to be freely traded and not restricted in any significant way.

The listing data for this issue are as follows:

1978 SE-3A Conclave

1978 SE-3A Conclave Patch

1978 SE-3A Conclave Patch

The 1978 SE-3A Conclave, “Service By The Sea”, was hosted by Klahican 331.   The pocket patch is pictured here.

This patch design is an apparent departure from established customs at that time.   There is no mention of the host lodge on the design.   Its totem does not appear.   There is nothing to indicate where the conclave was held.   One might be able to guess the host lodge as the only lodges in this section on the coast were Klahican and Croatan.

Lodge 331: Mystery Flap?

Posted in Klahican 331,SR-7B Lodges,Whatzit? by John E. Pannell on May 14th, 2008 at 3:02 am

I have been doing some patch identification for a friend of mine and ran across a flap from Klahican lodge that I could not identify. I have now shown the image to several North Carolina collectors but don’t yet have a conclusive answer about what this is. See the image at the top of this post. Click on it to see a much larger version of the same image. What do you think?

The flap has computer style embroidery with a dull silver mylar border and what I’ll call a “forest green” background.

Lodge 331: 2008 SR-7B Conclave Flap

331 S66?Klahican lodge issued one of the best looking flaps I have seen in a few years from any of the North Carolina lodges. The very artful sunrise scene is similar in design to the event patch. Kudos to the patch designer and the embroiderer for such nice work.

Now, why do I call this a sunrise instead of a sunset? Well, Klahican lodge is headquartered in Wilmington, NC. In that part of the country if you are seeing the Sun over the ocean it is most likely early in the morning!

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
