Wahunsenakah 333 Piankatank Chapter Winter 2011 Service

I have written several posts on this blog about patch designs that appear to have been copied or “inspired” by other designs, quite often from different lodges.   For example see the first and second posts using this same title.   Another example is this post on more “inspired” patches.

The patch pictured at the top of this post was a recent chapter event issue from Piankatank chapter of Wahunsenakah lodge.  (Editor’s note:  Please see correction in comments).   The lodge is chartered to the Colonial Virginia Council which could easily explain the American Revolution theme of the design.  However, the lodge totem is a duck so the hawk’s head might appear to be an unusual choice.

A friend gave this to me.   He acquired it a Trade-O-Ree and thought of me once he saw the design.   It’s obviously taken from Tsoiotsi Tsogalii’s 2010 SR-7B conclave flaps, listed on this site as S34? and S35?.

Perhaps someone in Wahunsenakah can fill us in on the story behind Piankatank chapter’s choice of patch design.  The artist of the lodge 70 flaps should be flattered that someone in another lodge was so impressed by his design that he chose to adapt it for his chapter’s event patch.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 S34?

Following the precedent established in 2009, Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge issued two flaps for this year’s SR-7B Conclave.   Thanks to Johnny Somers for the images of these pieces.

As with the Spring Fellowship patch, these flaps use an American Revolution theme.   The flag on the patches recognizes General Greene and the Battle of Guilford Court House.   The first flap (S34?, pictured) was issued only to those lodge brothers who pre-registered for the 2010 SR-7B conclave.     The red bordered version of this flap, S35?, was more common.   About 800 of them were issued and sold to all lodge brothers at the SR-7B conclave.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 eR2010-1?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge started an event called “First Event” in 2009.     This is a day long event held on the first Saturday after New Year’s Day, dedicated to both training and fun activities intended for a wide audience.     The second “First Event” was held last Saturday.     Thanks to Johnny Somers for the image of the patch for this year’s event.

In my opinion, this is one of the better portrayals of the lodge totem I have seen from this lodge.   It also uses a simple but aesthetically pleasing color scheme, unlike some of the other issues from this lodge.   Also, this patch is undated.   Can anyone confirm whether or not this means the patch is intended to be used for more than one year?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 eJ2009-4?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge held its Fall Fellowship a few weeks back.   Though not indicated on the patches, the lodge also celebrated its 15th anniversary this weekend.   In an unusual move the lodge issued two patches for this event.

The first patch was a rectangular patch designated as the “event patch”.   The hawk was designed to be brown, but for some reason I don’t understand it came out in red and some sort of purplish color.     The second item is a six inch tall “jacket patch”.     Youth in the lodge have dubbed this the “chicken patch”.     There was no special significance to this second patch beyond something the lodge leadership chose to create.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 J7?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge recently issued the third in its series of   “Four Chieftains”   jacket patches.     Participants and staff at the lodge’s LLD are given one of these with the remainders being sold to fund the next year’s LLD program.     The fourth and final patch in this series will be released at the lodge’s 2010 LLD.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 S33?+X20?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge issued a two part set for NOAC last January that I previously reported on this blog.     Recently I became aware that the lodge had decided to issue a second set just for those who are part of the lodge’s delegation and are serving on staff for NOAC.     It uses the same design as the earlier set however the border is changed from white to red.

200 of these sets have been produced, a low number for this lodge.         They will be issued 4 per person to all delegates and staff members from this lodge.       I do not know how any extras will be distributed, but if the lodge treats this like they have other special issues, they will be sold to those there.   I expect none will come home from Indiana.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 eR2009-2?

This year Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge is operating under a different calendar, changing the timing of events that had remained in place since the days of its predecessor lodges.     One of the changes moves the Spring Fellowship from early March to May; actually having the event in Spring instead of very late Winter.     I didn’t attend this year.     I had not even seen the event patch until Johnny Somers sent me a scan of it.

Some were disappointed with the rendering of this patch design.     The depiction of the lodge totem was worth a few giggles.     The tail of the hawk was accidentally rendered in pink instead of red, a silly mistake for someone to make.     Also the way that tail was rendered, made it look like something other than what was intended.     My guess is the design was intended to emulate a sheriff’s badge, or something similar.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 S32?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii lodge, except for when it is host lodge, can be counted on to issue a single flap for its section conclave delegation.   Usually these are produced in fairly large quantities.     Even though they are initially limited on Friday night, by the time the extras are sold on Saturday there has usually been an abundant supply of them.     The lodge earns a tidy little profit in the process.     This year was different.

The lodge decided to issues two flaps with a “Frat Boys” theme.   Both had the same design with only the border color differing.   One of these was a “pre-registration” flap.   This had a blue border and will probably be designated the lodge’s S31.   This was made available, one per person, to those who registered for the conclave before a set cut off date.     Approximately 220 (a very low number of patches for this lodge) were distributed.   No extras were made available.     In my opinion, the existence of this item was not as well publicized as it could have been.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 S30?+X19?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 has issued a two patch set for the upcoming 2009 National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC).     The design is an apparent depiction of the legend behind the lodge’s name, translated as “We Three Are Friends.”

I have been told the lodge intends this to be the only patches to be issued for this NOAC.     The set is intended to be a fundraiser for the lodge’s delegation and will be sold in the Old North State council office and at lodge events.

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii 70 eX2009-1?

Tsoiotsi Tsogalii hosted a new training weekend this past Saturday.     It’s officially called “First Event”.         The lodge 70 website says:

“…This event has been designed to offer the utmost in High Quality Excitement, Amazingly Pertinent Information, and Quality Instruction to help you learn a good portion of all that there is to learn about the Native American Programs of the Order of the Arrow.

Participants will also have the opportunity to polish leadership skills through hands on learning activities that will help them become more successful in and beyond Scouting…”

The patch at the head of this post was produced for this event.   125 were made and distributed one per person to those in attendance.   The few remaining patches were sold on a first come, first served basis one per person.
