Lodge 104: New Flap Design Under Discussion

UNC National Champions Flap

UNC National Champions Flap

My covert sources within the “Tar Heel Nation” have informed me that some in Occoneechee lodge may be considering yet another flap.     This flap would honor the UNC men’s basketball team winning the National Championship.     Yes, it’s a bit premature but these things need to be worked on in advance.

The flap design would be a break from the lodge’s recent tradition of showing modernized versions of their totem.   Some old timers within the lodge are upset at the cartoonish look of many of the lodge’s issues.           So this issue returns to a much simpler and more traditional design.

Tar Heel Video of the Day – 4/5/2009

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on April 5th, 2009 at 5:50 am

The UNC Tar Heels are now just one win away from a national championship after handily dispatching Villanova last night.     The Tar Heels have already beaten MSU once this year and now have the chance to whack them again.

Here’s something traditional for today.   These are some UNC songs sung by the “Clef Hangers” at their 30th anniversary concert.   Fans of that school in Durham should pay attention to the last four words, of “Hark the Sound”. ;)       It’s all in good fun of course.

Fans of American Idol might be notice Anoop Desai as a (then) current member of the “Clef Hangers”.         I don’t want that show but am told he’s popular among some even though he has no chance of winning it.

Tar Heel Video of the Day – 4/4/09

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on April 4th, 2009 at 5:50 am

Pandemonium breaks out on Franklin St. in Chapel Hill when UNC wins a “big game”.   The celebrations generally remain under control, but law enforcement officials are out in force.

Local officials know the celebrations after UNC beat the team that must not be named was only a warm up for what to expect should UNC win it all this weekend.       The Chapel Hill police department, the local sheriff’s department, NC state police and campus security department will all have extra officers on duty through late Monday night.

Tar Heel Video of the Day – 4/3/09

Here’s today’s video for those in the “Tar Heel Nation”.     It’s from early in the season and unfortunately a little bit out of date as “The Team That Must Not Be Named” won the ACC championship. Still it’s a good watch for those who need their fix of Tar Heels basketball…

In preparation for the UNC men’s basketball team’s   appearance in the Final Four this weekend, I plan to share some interesting and funny videos here.

This one recreates UNC’s 75-74 victory of Duke in Durham earlier this season.       ACC basketball fans, especially UNC fans, will get the humor.     Some others might be lost.

A Very Good Day for This Tar Heel!?

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on March 15th, 2008 at 5:47 pm

This is ACC tournament weekend, an important event for us here in the Southeast.

UNC squeaked out a last second win over Virginia Tech this afternoon.     Carolina now looks to repeat as the ACC champions.

In the second game Duke (aka “dook” or “Univeristy of New Jersey at Durham”)  lost to Clemson.         Clemson will be playing in the ACC championship game for the first time since OA flaps were still a novelty.

SI 2008 Player of the Year

Sports Illustrated has named junior forward Tyler Hansbrough as their 2008 National Player of the Year.   In the article announcing this choice Grant Wahl writes about a photo that Coach Williams keeps on his desk:

On the office desk of his Chapel Hill home, next to the portraits of his wife and children, North Carolina coach Roy Williams keeps a framed 8-by-10 picture of a young man drenched in his own blood.

UNC 103 – Clemson 93 (2OT)

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on February 11th, 2008 at 2:30 pm

Ty Lawson  sat out his second game due to an ankle injury.   It was obvious the team was not the same without him.

Clemson had lost 52 consecutive games in Chapel Hill going into this match up.     A Carolina victory would be a record for the most consecutive  home victories against a single opponent.   But it did not start well for the Tar Heels.

dook 89 — UNC 78

Posted in Tar Heel Basketball by John E. Pannell on February 7th, 2008 at 5:19 am

Last night was The Game.

Here in central North Carolina college basketball is very popular.     The rivalry between Duke University and UNC is longstanding and intense.   The teams play each other twice a year, once in Chapel Hill and once in Durham.     Currently dook is ranked number 2 nationally, and  Carolina is ranked number three.    Adding more intensity to this year’s rivalry is that some games in the first few rounds of the NCAA tournament will be played in Raleigh and Charlotte.   You can all have your  Super Bowl and the one Giant loss.     We have  the dook-UNC game.

Recent OAImages News

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
