Maryland would be an interesting, but difficult, state to use as a shape for an OA patch. To my knowledge no one has tried yet.     None of the lodges with council   headquarters in Maryland have even tried to use their state shape on a patch.

Only one lodge serves the state of Delaware and it’s not known for innovative or unusual patches. So the list of patches using these states’ shapes will be rather short.

Illinois and its governor have been in the news a lot recently so it seemed a good state to pick the the next entry in this series.

Throughout history there have been 58 lodges different lodges charted to councils headquartered in Illinois.   Most of these have long since merged or consolidated.   One of the Founders of the Order of the Arrow, Carroll A. Edson, worked as a professional in Chicago which enabled the OA to become established there early on.   Owasippe 7 was also created as one of the earliest lodge mergers.

The list of lodges that have issued patches in the shape of Illinois, or used that state in their patch designs is rather short.

States Covered Thus Far

States Covered Thus Far

It’s been a while since I posted an entry to this series, so I thought this would be a good break from what seems to be “Wahissa Week” here.

With it’s odd shaped border and two narrow panhandles, West Virginia’s shape would be technically difficult to render as a patch.     No lodge has yet attempted it.     It could make for an interesting jacket patch if someone was to work up a nice design.     A few of the state’s lodges, however, did use the state shape on some of their issues.

This will be a short list.

Next up in this series is Idaho, “The Gem State”.     The other posts in this category can be read here.

This will be a short list.     Only two lodges in this state used the state in their patch designs.     None of them are shaped like the state.

States Covered Thus Far

I now turn to the “Bee Hive State” for this installment of the series These 50 States. We have now passed the halfway point in this series.

Scouting is very popular in Utah, thanks in part to the influence of the LDS church.   As a result, the lodges tend to be active and are known today for their numerous and attractive patches.   Yet, of the five lodges that have been headquartered in Utah only two of these lodge names have been used on patches in the shape of Utah, or using this state’s shape.

Here is the next installment in the series, “These 50 States”.   As befits the smallest state, this is the shortest to date.   With this post, the New England area is now complete.

There has only been one lodge headquartered in Rhode Island at any time.     First we had Wincheck 534.   That has since merged with Neemat 124 to form Abnaki 102.   Neither Wincheck nor Abnaki lodges had any patches shape like Rhode Island.   Neither lodge has used the state shape as part of a patch design.   However, all is not lost.

After noticing that all Georgia was the only BSA Southern Region state not yet included in this series, I had “Georgia on my mind.” (even if the words are different)

Among all the lodges that have been in Georgia through the years only four have used the state’s shape on their patches.     There has only been one patch in the shape of this state and it has yet to be listed in Blue Book even though it was issued twenty years ago!

Only two flaps used the state outline in their design, and then along with the rest of the Southern Region.     All the others using this shape were events issues.

Mississippi, the Magnolia State, is the next state in the series of state shaped patches   and state shapes on patches. With this installment I am now about halfway through the states.   Nearly the entire southeastern US has not been covered.

This is one of the shorter lists.   There have only been seven lodges in Mississippi.   Five of these are still active.   I found no patches in the shape of this state.   Only three lodges used this shape as part of a patch design. Still, this is a varied list including lodge, events and chapter issues.

I turn to the Buckeye State for this installment in the series about state shapes on patches.     Through the years there has been 35 different lodges headquartered in Ohio, 23 of which are no longer active.     Several of these have used the shape of Ohio on their patches.

In addition to using the shape of this state in the design, this list includes classic issues shaped like Ohio as well as modern two-piece sets forming a similar shape.   Issues include odd-shapes, flaps, neckerchiefs, event patches and one chapter issue.

Ag-Im 156 1993 Events Issues

Here is the next entry in the series of posts on state shaped patches, and state shapes used in patches. About a third of the states have now been covered. Previous entries may be found in the category, “These 50 States.”

Michigan is one of the more difficult states to depict on a patch.     Its territory consists primarily of two peninsulas, roughly positioned perpendicular to each other.     It is largely bounded by Lakes Huron, Superior and Michigan.     As such, no patch is in the shape of the entire state.     Many patches depict one of the state’s two peninsular.     Ag-Im has issued two sets of event patches shaped like the state’s upper peninsula.

Tschipey Achtu Lodge: Update

Back in 2010 I announced the formation of Tschipey Achtu lodge as a result of the merger of Ty-Ohni 95 and Ganeodiyo 417. At the time I was told they would use the number 397, which is also their council number. This created a bit of controversy as that number is currently in use by Chilantakoba lodge in Louisiana. I also announced their first flap. Other than a 2010 Jamboree issue no further news from this lodge made it to me.

I was talking with a Roger Ward last night who was at the recent Winter South Carolina Trade-O-Ree. He tells me it has not been quiet in that lodge. The use of 397 was problematic. Many wanted to choose a different number. Some wanted to claim the number zero, but that was not well received given the special place Unami 1 holds in the Order of the Arrow. The Scout Executive, I am told, stepped in and told the lodge they will use the lower number from the two merged lodges.

The lodge is now known as Tschipey Achtu 95. I have updated the site to reflect this current information. Several new issues have also been added.

An OAImages iPad App?

Some of those who know me personally, know that I have gone over to the "Dark Side" and have started using Apple products. I bought an iMac a couple of months ago and just recently got an iPad. My brother is trying to tell me that my Droid's days are numbered.

I really like my iPad and started day dreaming about an OAImages app for it. I have no idea how to go about writing this and it would take me into an entirely new area from what I know. It's not something that would happen easily or soon. Here's your chance to give feedback. What do you think about an OAImages app? What would you put in it? Do you have any thoughts on how it would be distributed or how much it would cost?

Coming out of Hiding About April 1st

It's kind of odd to come out of hiding to post about a topic like this.

I'm hearing from some brothers that there have been gullible readers to this blog over the years. I would have thought it was obvious from the context of the posts, but the various posts made on this blog throughout the years that have appeared on APRIL FIRST are all satire. None of them are true. Read them and chuckle but please do not complain to your friendly OA National Committee members, Scout Executives, lodge advisers, or official website administrators about the "changes" that are "announced" in them.

Comment Spam

This is strictly an "FYI" post for those familiar with the issues facing those who maintain blogs and message boards where readers can post comments.

Recently I had been having issues here with comment spam getting past this blog's filters. I deleted the inappropriate posts as quickly as I could but this was still unacceptable to me, as well as additional work. I since have required that readers register before they're allowed to post comments here. That seems to have stopped the spammers.

I still see a number of probable spammers, mainly from Russian domains, registering on this blog but so far none have had their comments posted successfully.

I may test my luck for a short period of time in the near future. At some unannounced time, I will turn off the registration requirement for posting comments for a day or two. I want to see if the spammers have been chased away, or if they're just awaiting an easy opportunity to push their garbage Read the Full Post

Change in Comments Policy

This blog is being hit with a large number spam comments lately. There have been over 12,000 attempts to spam the blog with comments just within the past 60 days. Recently a few dozen comments, hawking service and goods I deem inappropriate for this blog, made it past the filters. Since I don't desire to spend more time deleting the spam as I find it and don't want inappropriate information to sit on my blog, I am tightening up the policy on commenting here.

Those who wish to comment must now register and be logged in before being to post comments. Registration is free and is not the same as membership to this site. This is a common practice on many blogs especially among sites run by more "traditional media" type companies.
